More Kung Poo than Kung Fu

“Prepare for awesomeness'' reads the tagline to Kung Fu Panda 2, the sequel to box-office smash Kung Fu Panda. Come the end credits, you will be wondering exactly where the awesomeness you were supposed to prepare for was. After being deemed the Dragon Warrior in the first film, the second picks up with food-loving panda Po (Jack Black) and the Furious Five warriors being tasked with a new and dangerous mission - defeat the evil peacock Lord Shen (Gary Oldman).

The screenwriters really want this to be a cute animated story that unites all of us.
Essentially the character of Po is a young man, living his life, when suddenly - kapow! He's the Dragon Warrior and he's forced to deal with something. Anything. Can we have a villain here? Oh, wait, there's Lord Shen - a Hitler-esque character complete with his very own Holocaust where he swaps killing Jews for killing pandas. The script plugs too hard for an emotional arc - a journey of self-discovery - when the best thing about the first Kung Fu Panda was the frivolity.

The character of Po is literally Jack Black in panda form, there's no added features or altered voice work. When Po speaks, you just see the chubby comedian. The rest of the voice cast, who actually try and manipulate their pipes to create more believable characters, are completely underused. Talent like Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen, Dustin Hoffman, Oldman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Danny McBride and even Jean-Claude Van Damme barely get a few lines. DreamWorks Animation would have paid the big bucks for them, so it seems wasteful for the film to be taken up with Blackisms.

Visually, Kung Fu Panda 2 is faultless and the closest DreamWorks has come to rivalling the superior Pixar. The animators deliver a one-two punch with a combination of first rate computer generated animation in 3D and more traditional, 2D animation used in flashback scenes. Unfortunately a pretty pictures does not a good movie make. With story and humour both lacking, Kung Fu Panda 2 is a school holiday film only young children will find amusing. For the rest of us, it's a boring and been-there-before 90 minutes.

Kung Fu Panda 2 is out Thursday, June 23.

It's what all the cool kids are doing . . .

It seems all the cool kids these days are starting up their own production companies. Leonardo Dicaprio, Reese Witherspoon, Adam Sandler, Natalie Portman, Hugh Jackman, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are just a few of the A-list celebs who have been using their hard earned millions to start up production companies. Personally I think it’s great to see these guys put something back in to the industry which they have got so much from. So I've decided to do a series on some of the companies out there as there's simply too much content for one post. There will be a new production company featured each day with a run down on the motivations behind their start ups and a complete filmography. To start of the series who better than Mr Chiseled Abs himself, Brad Pitt and his baby Plan B Entertainment.

Talk about awkward . . . Brad Pitt and then wifey Jennifer Aniston founded this production company along with the CEO of Paramount Brad Grey. The company has had some pretty major hits considering its short history. Aniston withdrew from the company when she divorced Pitt and he started having babies with another, hotter woman. Like most of these companies they tend to produce films in which the actor stars. Plan B currently has a deal with Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros and 20^th Century Fox.

Keanu Reeves is also thrown in for good measure and Little Miss Sunshine legend Alan Arkin is in a lead too.

Holy heart failure Batman!

If you thought the possibility of Angelina Jolie as Catwoman in the next Batman was the most exciting addition to the Chris Nolan’s cast then you’re wrong! Sooooo very wrong.
Latest rumours have Johnny Depp in talks to play the Riddler.
How great would that be! I say tres great. Will Ferrell was apparently keen on the role but now the Depp-inator is in the works casting directors will no doubt pass on Feral opps I mean Ferrell. We all know how superb Depp is at playing bright, wacky characters thanks to Tim Burton’s version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Jim Carrey’s version of the Riddler will be a hard act to follow but Depp is the best actor of our generation and no doubt he will surpass previous attempts.

Oscar winner and buzz-actor of the moment Phillip Seymour Hoffman is in talks to play the Penguin. Danny DeVito played a twisted, dark version of the role in Burton’s Batman Returns. Hmmm I wonder if Hoffman will be commanding an army of intelligent Penguins and circus freaks in the Chris Nolan version??? I think not.

Good things come in twos, Part I

There’s two new movie trailers that have got me really, really excited lately with the first being Watchmen and the second being Max Payne.
The official Watchmen trailer appeared on YouTube last week and high fives all round to the marketing team behind that one! Watchmen has long been considered one of, if not the, best graphic novels of all time so a film adaption was inevitable. In brief, the story is based around the murder of an ex-superhero and a former vigilante who decides to do a bit of digging around. Suspense, action, drama and awesomeness ensues. Basically it’s like The Incredibles but darker. Zac Synder, the guy behind 300, is directing. Also the casting director behind Watchmen deserves a big box of Ferrero Rocher’s for having the balls to pick a no-name cast. Don’t take that as an insult, I mean it in a 100% complimentary way because if you slapped on names like Angelina Jolie as Silk Spectre, Clive Owen as The Comedian and Hugh Jackman as Nite Owl then people aren’t going to be focused on the story anymore, they’ll be focused on the stars. And the Watchmen story deserves to be focused on.

Holy haberdashery Batman!

This just in: according to a News.com article Angelina Jolie is looking at playing the role of Catwoman. Former Catwoman Julie Newmar has said Jolie is in final negotiations with studio execs to secure the role. But will she play the cat in a spin off movie or alongside Christian Bale in Chris Nolan’s Batman films? Previously Nolan has said he wants to steer away from some of the more fantastical Batman characters such as Dr Freeze and Clayman. But is Catwoman a possibility for future films? Hmmmmm. . . .
Lets hope Jolie does a better job than Halle Berry. But is it possible to do a better job than Michelle Pheiffer?
