Sheer heart attack as Jade Ewen performs Sugababes charity gig in lacy, see-through jumpsuit

Thursday, January 28, 2010

By Georgina Little

She's got legs: Jade Ewen flaunts her enviable pins and very toned arms

As the old adage goes, if you've got it flaunt it.

Which is exactly what Sugababe Jade Ewen did last night as she showed off her long legs in an outfit that left very little to the imagination.
There were a few hearts fluttering in the audience as the 21-year-old swivelled her hips and stuck out her bottom while strutting her stuff in a lace body suit, white leotard and towering platform shoes.

Here Come The Girls: The Sugababes strut their stuff as the headline act

She and her fellow Sugababes - Heidi Range, 26, and Amelle Berrabah, 25 - performed a headline set at Koko in Camden, London last night for a special gig to raise awareness about cervical cancer..

And not to be completely overshadowed, Heidi and Amelle donned eye-catching outfits of their own with Amelle in a short black dress, slashed at the thigh, while Heidi opted for a short sequinned number.

But there was no question that Jade was the one getting all the attention as she and the girls sang a number of tracks at the Fight Cervical Cancer In Style event

Who needs trousers? Wearing transparent leggings, Sugababe Jade Ewen leans forward showing a pert bottom during the Fight Cervical Cancer in Style event at Koko in London last night

Bottoms Up: The girls show off their curves as they sang a number of their tracks, including Wear My Kiss

And not forgetting why they were there, Amelle told the crowd: 'You might as well go and get a smear and check it out because it's your life you're playing with here and it's so easy.

'It takes five minutes out of your time and you could save yourself a lot of trouble in the future.'

Cervical cancer awareness is a cause close to the girls' hearts after seeing good friend Jade Goody lose her battle with the disease last March, just weeks after they performed at her wedding.

Dynamic duo: Not to be outdone by their bandmate, Amelle and Heidi show off their assets in figure-hugging outfits

But they admitted that they had been previously unaware about how widespread the disease is until they were approached to front the campaign.

Amelle said: 'We work for a lot of charities anyway and as soon as we heard about it we were really interested and just for the simple fact as well that we learned so much.

'When they told us some of the facts, we were like, "Are you joking?" Three people a day die from cervical cancer. It's the most common cancer in women from the age of 20 to 29, the second most common cancer from under 35.

Raising awareness: The Sugbabes and concert host Lauren Laverne (far right) with Prime MInister's wife Sarah Brown

Also performing at the charity concert last night, which was presented by T4 star Miquita Oliver and BBC6 DJ Lauren Laverne, was Pixie Lott, Paloma Faith and La Roux.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife Sarah Brown, who has lent her support to the cause, gave a speech urging women to get regularly checked.

With Mo-Mo no longer in the picture, Thor takes over the role of Jackie's sharing buddy in the chapel

Nurse Jackie", pill-popping nurse who juggles double persona in the hospital and back at home, will be back for a second season on March 22 on Showtime. A brief look at how she would continue hiding her secret from the rest of her co-workers after Eddie found out about her being married, is given in a new trailer.

The promo actually is a mash up of scenes from the first season and the new one. Some of the things expected from the second season are Coop getting his big break being listed in a New York magazine, the schizophrenic guy living in the building across the hospital being admitted to ER, and Jackie sharing her thoughts in the chapel with Thor instead of Mo-Mo.

It was confirmed back in December last year that Mohammed De La Cruz aka Mo-Mo is no longer part of the show. The character played by Haaz Sleiman lost the spotlight to Eve Best's Dr. O'Hara. "We love Haaz; we miss him," Exec Producer Linda Wallem said. "[The character] did not sustain what we wanted to do because O'Hara took over the best friend role."

Daybreaking it down

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Vampires are, like, so hot right now given the popularity of The Twilight Saga and television shows True Blood and The Vampire Diaries. But if you are concerned vampires have lost their bite, never fear, Daybreakers is here.

Set in the not-too-distant-future, 2019, a plague has transformed most humans into vampires and the dominant species is facing a dwindling blood supply because, well, they ate everyone.
Enter Edward Dalton (yes, another vampire called Edward*) played by Ethan Hawke, who may have found a solution to the `vampire plague' after conducting research with a covert band of humans.

Written and directed by wunderkinds Michael and Peter Spierig, known as the Spierig Brothers, there is no doubt they are Australia's next big Hollywood export. The plot combines elements of the zombie and vampire genres, while being a timely allegory on the precious natural resources.
Comparisons to The Matrix and 28 days Later are not unfounded, with Daybreakers exceeding the usual cliche constraints of a horror film.

The Spierig Brothers have clearly been influenced by the greats, like George A. Romero, as there are some very Dawn of the Dead-esque moments toward the end. The cinematography is sharp, action scenes superbly choreographed and there is such a loving attention to detail fanboys around the world will be getting wet over the Spierig Bros.

A tense ride for the most part, comic relief comes in the form of Willem Dafoe's character Lionel `Elvis' Cormac who is a like a cross between a bounty hunter, Woody Harrelson's character in Zombieland and Billy Ray Cyrus. In particular there's one scene when Dalton asks Elvis if he's safe in the human lair and he replies "bout as safe as going bareback with a $5 whore." Gold.

The humour is threaded thickly throughout the film and the Spierig's have their tongue so firmly in cheek, you think it may burst out the other side like a gloriously gorey moment in the film. One of the most enjoyable horror outings in recent years, Daybreakers is no pain in the neck.

Daybreakers is released in Australian cinemas next Thursday, Feb 4.

My preciousssss

Every now and again a film comes along that reminds you what going to the movies is all about. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is one such film. You won't find any mutli-million dollar special-effects or Hollywood glamour here, just an incredible story superbly executed.

Meet Precious, a 16-year-old illiterate teen living in the ghetto and pregnant with her second child. Not the easiest of situations, especially when you factor in the abuse she experiences from her mother and father. But Precious' life starts to head in a new direction when she attends an alternative school and the people she meet there begin to have an affect on her life.

Director Lee Daniels does an excellent job of handling this grim material in a manner that makes it ultimately uplifting. He builds the tension to an almost unbearable level, relieves it with a well-timed gag, and then starts the process again with the audience hanging in there the whole way.

He teases exceptional performances from the ensemble cast, none more so than newcomer Gabourey Sidibe as Precious who brings a determined vulnerability to the role that should win her the best actress Oscar (all things being fair and true in the world). Mo'Nique is ferocious as the abusive parent, Paula Patton delivers a beautiful, stable performance as the inspired teacher and the young cast of students bring vibrant energy.
The real show-stoppers are music stars Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz, who are phenomenal.Carey in particular is unrecognisable from her critically lampooned performance in Glitter, opting for daggy, community counsellor garb instead of sequined boob-tubes for this role. Her character could have tipped over into melodramatic, but Carey delivers a reserved and quietly confident turn.

For a film so steeped in the harshness of reality, the little touches of fantasy are a welcome treasure for Precious and the audience alike. Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire is not an easy film, nor should it be given the subject matter. Yet by the poignant closing credits you will feel like you have witnessed the art of storytelling at its most powerful.
Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire is out in Australian cinemas next Thursday, Feb 4

X Factor finalist Stacey Solomon ditches the glamour as she steps out with her bedhead hair

Bedhead: Dressed-down Stacey Solomon leaves her Dagenham home looking like she's just rolled out bed with her messy hair

During her months on The X Factor, Stacey Solomon looked chic and stylish as she sang her heart out in a variety of designer outfits.

But just a month after she ended up in third place, it looks like Solomon has ditched the glamour for the natural look.

The fresh-faced 20-year-old looked like she had just rolled out of bed with her messy hair and tracksuit as she left her Dagenham home on Tuesday.

Heading off to a local tanning salon to boost her faux golden glow, the single mother looked down-to-earth as she wore a purple tracksuit with her curly hair scrapped back into a messy ponytail.

And of course Stacey was wearing her beloved Ugg boots, in which she was regularly photographed outside the X Factor house in north London during the series.

But later that night, Stacey couldn't have looked better as she arrived looking pretty and polished at a screening of the new Disney Skyrunners movie in London's May Fair Hotel.

Wearing wet-look skinny 'treggings' and a tailored jacket, a bronzed Stacey looked groomed as she posed on the red carpet.

Dressed down to dazzling: After starting the day off in her tracksuit, Stacey later looked polished at the Skyrunners screening in London

Since landing in third place on the show last month, Stacey has been busy performing in gigs across the country.

She is hoping to land a record contract, but has sensibly thought of a back-up option if her pop dreams fail to materialise

She said: 'I don't know why people are interested in me - I mean, it's not as if I won, is it?

'I want to be a successful singer, and if I work hard, with luck maybe someone will offer me a recording contract, or the chance to do some singing.

'If, God forbid, nothing comes out of this then I will just have to go back to college to learn how to teach people to sing. Then at least singing will still be my job.'

During her time on the show, she famously declared 'there's always Asda' if she didn't win.

When she was first evicted, the Essex blonde admitted she was worried the public may forget her.

She explained: 'In a year, I'd like to be singing somewhere like the V Festival. But I'm worried I'll get forgotten. You start thinking, "I haven't won - what's going to happen?"

'But if you work hard and want something bad enough you can do well. Good people get good things.'

Could This Be The Start Of The New Leg Down For BDI?

Had not made any update on the Baltic Dry Index for quite some time already.

My last posting was on 12 Nov 2009,
The Baltic Dry Index Continues To Surge But Is it Sustainable?. BDI then closed at 3748 and the posting questions the sustainability of the surge.

Since then BDI had corrected quite significantly.

Yesterday I noted a stronger downward movement in the index. The Index closed at 3118, down some 2.7% and yes, I am wondering, would this be the start of a new downtrend movement?

The following news article was rather interesting:
Shipping industry in choppy waters

  • ... While large ships like Capesizes have lost sheen, the decline in the last few days was led by a 6.7 per cent drop in medium sized Supramax hiring rates.

The industry expects further weakening with the approaching Chinese New Year.

K S Nair, director of Shipping Corporation of India said, “There will be no trade to China now, and unless economies like the US and Europe open up to see more exports out of China, there will be a lull.”

    Besides,
monetary tightening in China may also curb demand for more imports.

Although analysts feel correction in short term may not be dramatic, any fall further from this level could be a cause of worry.

Vikram Vilas Suryavanshi, an analyst at Karvy Broking said, “There will not be too much left for shippers below 3,000 levels and then again dry bulk ships could be laid up.”

Meanwhile, a slew of new ship deliveries in the next two to three years also loom hard on any expected revival in the shipping market and till economies like the US and Europe open up, shippers will face the heat of volatility.

The Chinese New Year should indeed a factor but I found two interesting points being mentioned.

The monetary tightening in China is already considered to be an issue for the shipping industry. Hmmm... rather fast, eh?

And not helping.... a slew of new ship deliveries.... which would 'could' potentially equate to supply of ships more than the demand for the shipping.

How?
