Savage’s favourite movies

On Friday I had the opportunity to shake it like a gypsy, stop, woo back it up and let them see your hips swing. By that, I of course mean interview Polynesian/Kiwi rapper Savage. Being from this neck of the woods and a closet gangsta, not to mention my Maori heritage, I'm a huge fan of his work and collaborations with artists such as Scribe, Akon, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg and so on. However, those of you playing at home are most likely to know his song Swing, which was used in Knocked Up when Seth Rogen's character unleashes the now infamous `dice throwing' dance move on Katherine Heigl. After his song was used in the film, it went on to sell over 1.2 million copies in the US and broke him into the international market, where he has been tearing it up ever since. I spoke to him recently about a bunch of stuff, including his new album and upcoming tour, and he revealed he has a bit of a man crush on The Rock. He said:

"I got to really represent my culture, being the only Polynesian hip hop artist out there I got to represent my heritage and let all other Polynesians know that we were going to start our own movement. There are lots of Polynesian athletes and actors, like The Rock, but no hip hop artists. I have some friends that know him and they say he speaks highly of me, we’re from the same village and all Polynesians are like family, you know."

Yes, I do, and you will be surprised to know that despite being a physically intimidating guy, Savage is actually very sweet and big-hearted. Like a BFG really. So I had no qualms asking the rapper about his favourite movies of all time:

"My favourite movie of all time is definitely The Shawshank Redemption. My favourite ganster movie would have to be a toss up between Menace II Society and Good Fellas. But recently the best movie I’ve seen action-wise was Hitman 1 and 2, and the funniest movie I’ve seen was Knocked Up. When I first saw I landed on that movie I had no idea who it was directed by, I thought it was going straight to DVD. I had no idea that it was going to become a blockbuster and do all the things it did. It’s really funny."
