“I’m very taken with Cassavetes films for lots of different reasons. I also like early Scorsese films; early American independent cinema was really important for me and my generation. Also early Michael Winterbottom films like Wonderland. I tend to see a wide range of films.”
"Dead Man Walking, In The Name Of The Father, Amelie, Guide To Recognising Your Saints, My Summer Of Love and I just saw film Blue Valentine, which I love. I’m about to direct my second short film which I’ve written and directed, I got a grant from the NSW government, and those are just a few of the films that inspire me when I’m doing that. Oh and one of my favourite films of all time is Garden State."
For this week's edition of Favourite Movie Friday, Scottish comedian Danny Bhoy shared his picks:
"Gosh, there’s a film I saw recently that I didn’t know what to expect from but it really resonated with me - Up In The Air. I spend so much time flying and in airport lounges and hotels, it’s a fairly lonely experience, although privileged. And some of the things that he said which were so politically incorrect but really true – like joining whatever queue has Chinese people in it, I think about that too. Of all time though I’m a huge fan of The Godfather trilogy, The Deer Hunter, a lot of those late 70s stylized films. I really liked One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, that was a great film."
This week Thor star Jaimie Alexander shares her Favourite Movie picks. I don't usually run this segment with posters, but her character one as Sif is so bad-ass I had to include it.
“I like Midnight Cowboy, which I watched to prepare for Loosies. I’m a huge fan of animated movies. I’ll go to the theatre to see them above anything. I like Ice Age and Despicable Me. I also really like sci-fi adventure films, I enjoy that genre.”

I’m feelin’ rough, I’m feelin’ raw and in the prime of my life so I thought what better time to share Andrew VanWyngarden’s Favourite Movie Friday picks. Yep, okay that was a cruel pun. But what can I say? I’m down with the kids *spins bowtie*. For those of you without an electric feel *huzzah!*, VanWyngarden is one half of electro rock outfit MGMT and these are his all time fave flicks:
“Dude Ranch and Wayne’s World is probably one of my top favourite movies. I just like dumb, comedy movies most of the time.”

You may remember me ranting and raving about interviewing one of my heroes, John Cameron Mitchell, back in March of this year. Although I’m yet to post my extensive feature with him (it’s coming, I swear) here are his picks for favourite movies:
“I would say A Woman Under The Influence, throw in Annie, Knight Of Siberia, The King Of Comedy, Dr Strangleove and Network.”
Short, but to the point. Stay tuned for my feature with one of the nicest guys in show bizz coming later this month. We talk homosexuality, republicans, censorship and Hollywood. There are minimal tangents, I swear.
Tweens, listen up; fuck Justin Bieber. The only male you need to be throwing your panties at with the initials J B is Jason Byrne. Erm, actually the Irish comedian has a wife and two kids, so maybe lower your panty throwing arm. However, my point remains – Jason Byrne is awesome. I interviewed him earlier this year ahead of a 10-week Australia tour and I swear, I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in an interview. I’ve been a fan of his stand-up for years and it’s nice to know he’s a natural talent; his hilariousness isn’t the result of an overly-produced, strategic collection of jokes. Of course we talked favourite movies and below is his eclectic rant on his most beloved films. Go on, try to resist laughing-out-loud when you read this, I dare ya.
"Probably my first favourite move was Indiana Jones: Raiders of The Lost Ark. I would come from home school at lunchtime and watch the bulk of that movie and a friend would do the German and I would do the English dialogue. He didn’t know what he was saying but he would say all the German words. Now he’s a WWII memrobilia collector, how weird is that? If I walk by the tele and Jaws is on I’ll watch it and the same goes with the James Bond movies. I like evil movies, like The Exorcist and my favourite program is Dexter at the moment. I met the writer Jeff Lindsay on Adam Hills’ show (Gordon St Tonight) and I nearly shat myself. I love anything dark like that or action/adventure. I even like black and white English movies, like Breakfast At Tiffany’s, that kind of shit. I love the way they talk “oh, look at the sun.” I love Ladykillers and Peter Sellers movies.
Now, what’s something I’ve seen recently? The last thing I saw on the plane was Eclipse (The Twilight Saga). I had to watch it and see what the fuck it’s about. It’s not complete shit, there’s enough killing and stabbing for me but it was the sitting in the daisies saying “I know what I want, I want to be a vampire” that got me (pissed). You’re 17, you don’t know what you fucking want, now get your ass home! If I was 17 my mother would have never let me be a vampire. I watched Will Ferrell’s The Other Guys too, that was very fucking funny."
So, if that didn’t convince you he’s the greatest human being ever, maybe the fact the fact he had an outburst in the middle of the interview to say “Fuck! The fucking air-con in this country, it’s fucking ridiculous!” will. Byrne is coming to the big screen later this year in Killing Bono with Ben Barnes, Krysten Ritter and the late Pete Postlewaite and stay posted for an exclusive chat about that.
Soul/R'n'B legend John Legend, aka Kanye West's BFF, is playing at the 2011 Byron Bay Bluesfest tomorrow night and what perfect timing to share his favourite movies. I interviewed Mr Legend around Oscar time, so that's why his answers are a tad Academy Award-themed. Enjoy.
I chatted with the frontman of one of my favourite rock bands last week, British India, and as soon as Declan Melia and I spent the first five minutes bagging out Anne Hathaway, I knew I was in for an awesome interview. When it came to favourite movies, Melia shared his spot-on picks below:
"Detroit Rock City, it had Edward Furlong in it, I like Brick, Reds, which is this really long film directed by and starring Warren Beatty. It's about the Russian revolution and really good, and probably The Graduate, I have a big poster of it in my room. It's one of the few movies that was better than the book."
Some great choices there and if you want to see British India in all their live glory, they're playing at The Cooly Hotel tonight.

"I’ve been getting that question a lot lately. I should really know the answer by now. How To Train Your Dragon was my favourite movie of 2010 . . .I have so many, this could go for a while. District 9, Lord Of The Rings trilogy and of course I Am Number Four and Flipped (laughs)."
I know, pretty crazy right? I'm still flabbergasted to add rap legends Bone Thugs-n-Harmony to the list of celebrities who have shared their flick picks for Favourite Movie Friday. The lads are reuniting and currently in the throws of a world tour, but I spoke to Krayzie Bone from his home in California about his favourite movies. Here's what he had to say: "Man, I love scary movies, you know? Like Friday The 13th and Halloween. I also like funny movies, like Death At A Funeral (American remake). I like a lot of stuff; I don’t have so many favourites but I watch a lot of movies so usually their just scary or funny." MM: Yeah, I'm a huge horror fan too. A lot of rappers have made the leap into acting, especially within the horror genre. Is that something you're looking at doing in the future? "You know, it’s something that I’d like to do but the opportunity hasn’t come up yet. I’ve got my fingers crossed though."
I interviewed one of my all time heroes this week - Tim Robbins. Besides being flabbergasted at his awesomeness for the duration of the interview, I also managed to chat to him about his music, movies and political projects. This undoubtedly has to be the funnest favourite movie Friday I've done, well, ever. One of my most adored musical acts, Matt and Kim (above), were in Australia earlier this year for the Big Day Out. I was lucky enough to sit down with them backstage for a chat and this is what they had to say about their favourite flicks:
Kim: Oh, we’ve got this! Shaun of the Dead, that’s my number one movie.
Matt: Shaun of the Dead is awesome. Zoolander. I mean, there’s a lot of movies that we like, The Royal Tenenbaums, I like that too, but we really like kind of comedies mostly.
K: We like a lot of rom-coms.
M: Because we fly a lot. When I’m flying I don’t want to watch the most intellectual movie. I just want to be able to dumb down and be like `oh, 27 Dresses!’.
K: On the way here we watched . . .we watch a lot of TV. You have Modern Family here right? Yeah, we love that. And Cougar Town, that’s another favourite.
It's no secret I'm quite the Arjy Bargy fan and I was lucky enough to interview the comedian a few weeks ago ahead of his Gold Coast show at the Arts Centre on Tuesday, March 22. He chatted to me via phone while a friend dropped him at his hotel in Sydney and yes, of course I asked him about his favourite movies:
"Gentleman Broncos really cracks me up. I've seen it, like, three times over the holiday season. Jemaine (Clement) is also in that, the director Jared (Hess) is great and there are just some really good unknown actors. That movie fucking kills me. Apocalypse Now, which was amazing. I watched a redux version recently, like a re-release. Easy Rider is just such a beautifully film shot in a beautiful . . .what do they call it? Technicolour. It's just beautiful and has interesting footage and is a pretty intense movie. Those are just three that I really like. And I saw Scott Pilgrim which was great and really unexpected. That's the best way to see it (with no expectations), my friend told me to see it."

It’s a grey day today, so what better way to brighten it up than Favourite Movie Friday with the Queen of colour herself – Sia! I interviewed the quirky Australia songstress at the Big Day Out in January, and she was one of the coolest people I’ve interviewed. Ever. Such a delightfully nice, open person who, coincidentally, happens to make beautiful, soul-rattling music. Anyway, enough about that, here’s her favourite movie picks:
“Festen, it’s a German film. Well, at least I think it’s German . . . it’s Dogma style. Splash, Annie, Grease 1 and 2, Fightclub, In The Bedroom. What’s that Facebook movie? The one that’s come out recently . . .fish something? (MM: Catfish). Yes, I loved Catfish.”

Yeah, I interviewed Posdnuos aka Plug One from De La Soul, it’s no big deal. They’re only one of the greatest hip hop acts EVER! I’m going to see them and their awesomeness in concert again tonight so what better time to post favourite movie picks from Plug One. Hit me:
“Wow, I love movies, my favourite of all time is Excalibur, followed by Blues Brothers, Usual Suspects, Aliens, Aliens 3. I really love movies, I watch them religiously.
Movie Mazz: So are you happy with the Oscar nominations then? Have you seen any of the nominees?
“Yeah, I just saw Winter’s Bone the other day and that was a really great film. That actress is young and just getting into it, but it’s so great that that movie can be a part of it. Hat’s off to movies man, I always love being part of something that can entertain you and take you away, then you come out into the real world.”

I had the opportunity to interview the youngest son of the legendary Bob Marley and awesome reggae/rap artist in his own rite, Damian Marley, late last year. As excited as I was, unfortunately his favourite movie choices were as uninspired and cringe-worthy as the ordeal of conducting an interviewing with him. He says:
“I like The Godfather series. A lot of people like that.”

He’s arguably the world’s greatest comedy musician and when I was lucky enough to interview the surprising normal Weird Al Yankovic, he shared these favourite movie choices with me:
“My favourite movies are mostly, oddly enough, comedies. I’m not a fan of all the spoof movies of the last decade, but I like ones like Top Secret, Airplane, early Zucker Brothers stuff. God, I could make a list, but all of them are smart but silly, pretty much.”
Wow, yes, I’m completely and utterly honoured to add the QUEEN of neo-soul to my list of favourite movie contributors. I interviewed the very mellow and fascinating Badu a few weeks ago ahead of her first Australian visit and here’s what she had to say RE: favourite movies:
“French film Amelie, The Holy Mountain . . .I have a new favourite film, Enter The Void. Oh my, I didn’t know what to think or feel. It was a lot. I was impressed by that film not only because of the cinematography but the risks the director took and his ability to take the audience in and out of those emotions at will. That’s what art is about and that’s why those are just three of my favourite films that I appreciate.”
A very interesting and justified answer from a very amazing woman.
