The rock star returns: Iron Man 2 review

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

With big stars, big effects, big action and a big soundtrack by AC/DC, Iron Man 2 really is a rock star movie. As one of the most anticipated films of the year, it will not disappoint fans of the original and lovers of the Marvel comic series on which it is based. The original was the surprise hit of 2008 and heralded the comeback of its star Robert Downey Jr, who is once again in fine form as the wise-cracking, playboy, billionaire industrialist Tony Stark.

The film kicks off six months after Stark revealed his true identity as the superhero Iron Man and despite claiming to have “privatised world peace” he is facing pressure from the government and the public to share his technology with the military. Unwilling to let go of his invention, Stark, along with his love interest Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and best friend James `Rhodey’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle), must forge new alliances in order to confront powerful new enemies such as tycoon Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) (below) and Russian villain Whiplash (Mickey Rourke). Backing up Stark on his mission is the leader of superhero team The Avengers, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his agent Natasha Romanoff aka super spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). There is also a somewhat sad cameo from Adam Goldstein aka DJ AM and the film is dedicated to his memory.
The first Iron Man was an action-packed, hilarious and clever twist on the traditional superhero movie and to follow up the brilliance of the original is no easy task. For the most part, director and producer Jon Favreau succeeds. Favreau, who also plays a supporting role in the film, has assembled a stellar cast of Hollywood A-listers to create the array of complex characters which are the films main source of depth and conflict. Notably, the always-impressive Rockwell oozes charisma and charm as Stark’s corporate rival and Johansson (below) makes a formidable and sexy transition into the role of `action babe’. The press notes say she trained for months to be able to pull off most of the her own stunts and make them look believable, and boy, right down to the spandex clad body suit and thigh-strangling moves does it look believable. Cheadle replaces Terrence Howard for the role of `Rhodey’ and frankly, does a better job at it adding more attitude and street cred. Looking somewhat like a cross between Jack Sparrow and Randy 'The Ram' Johnson, Rourke too is commendable, despite the fact he has more screen interaction with a Cockatoo than any of the other actors.
But essentially this is Downey Jr’s film and he reprises his role as Stark with the swagger and sophistication that has made him one of the best actors of his generation, personal problems aside. Where Batman is dark and mysterious, Iron Man is flashy and indulgent, with Downey Jr complimenting the character perfectly. Kind of like the Hugh Hefner of the superhero world.

Favreau has maintained the witty banter and satire that made the original standout from other films in the genre and, if possible, the script is sharper and timelier than its predecessor. There are some sheer genius throwaway lines and the best ones roll of the tongues of Downey Jr, Rockwell and Jackson every few minutes. Truly, there are too many to mention. However, what the sequel lacks is the rollicking pace that had audiences on the edge of their seats in Iron Man. It starts promisingly and ends with a bang, but somewhere in the middle the film slows down and loses its hold on the illusion. Of course, the sharp dialogue, expertly choreographed action scenes and incredible special-effects somewhat make up for that.
But the question all sequels have to answer is: was it better than the original? No, but is still a worthy entrant into the growing Iron Man franchise and a fantastic two hours of entertainment. Iron Man 2 once again proves more money, more stars and more fans are not the key to a brilliant sequel, just a decent one.

Iron Man 2
opens in cinemas worldwide on Thursday, April 29.
NOTE: For those fans of you hoping for an Easter egg at the end of the credits like last time, don’t bother. I was one of the three critics who stayed and waited right until the end hoping for an added scene like last time with Nick Fury busting in and asking Stark to join The Avengers. But alas, nothing. On a related note, Fury does get plenty of screen time in the film and Jackson takes on an almost Jules-esque persona when he says “Sir, I’m gonna have to ask you to exit the donut.” Those hoping for more superhero mash-ups a la the first film or Downey Jr’s cameo in The Incredible Hulk can rest assured, Fury and Black Widow allude to the up and coming The Avengers film more aggressively. There’s even a tongue-in-cheek scene where one of the assistants finds an old S.H.I.E.L.D logo and Stark unknowingly uses it to balance an invention. Alright sure, Stark turns them down by saying “I already told you, I don’t want to join your super secret boy band” but at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter because you know it happens and they all kick ass anyway (like a hyperactive Brady Bunch).

PSSSST: Fans of Kick-Ass and comic book brilliance in general, keep an eye out for the `special thanks to’ segment of the credits where the filmmakers thank John Romita Jr and John Romita Sr. Stan Lee also has a brief cameo as himself, just like he does in all superhero films adapted from his work

2 good to be true

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

The second, more substantial Iron Man 2 trailer went viral yesterday and geekoids the world over reacted with sufficient excitement. My favourite online reactions were:

Mikfly: OMG man... this was AWESOME, my keyboard is destroyed now because I jizzed all over it.

Army Archerd: I would love to play with her golden globes!

hedecline182: Marked as spam no puede ser mas lindo...

666evil6cow666: Marvel I owe your infinity internet, and you owe me a pair of un-jizzed underwear

badmitz : scarJo can throw me down anytimeee

roxxas5: I just had a nerdgasm.

Bless YouTube. But rightly so roxxas5, because while the first trailer had plenty of fire power, I thought it lacked the flamey goodness which made the first film so darn wicked.

The new Iron Man 2 trailer delivers and promises to be just as good as Jon Favreau’s first super hero flick, if not better. Importantly, it dangles the carrot a tad closer than the first trailer by showing the supporting cast, particularly Sam Rockwell, ScarJo and Samuel L. Jackson in a few flashes of juicy screen time.

Now, if only they could wrap up the film with Gwyneth’s head in a box…..

Taking the Mickey

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Well, well, well.
Mickey Rourke’s turn as Russian baddie Whiplash certainly makes Jack Sparrow look straight as a ruler. This, dear readers, is the latest image off the set of Iron Man 2, the sequel to the Robert Downey Jr hit of `08. Rourke stars as the thorn in Tony Stark’s metallic side for the sequel along with Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. This is the first look at Rourke as Whiplash and was pointed to off Jon Favreau’s Twitter account. I must say, the get-up is a bit. . . erm . . campe? With Scar-Jo in leather as Black Widow and Rourke rocking the bondage, it seems the sequel will be catering to all fetishes. Bunuel would be proud kinky has gone so mainstream.

There's no place like Holmes

Sunday, February 15, 2009

Just quickly y'all, here is the latest still from Guy Ritchie's big screen adaptation of Sherlock Holmes: Okay, so it's not the most exciting photo but it's a photo none the less. I'm positively pumped about this and although there may have been a bit of scepticism about Ritchie's capabilities as director, his latest effort Rocknrolla has restored every ounce of faith I have in the man. Everyone's favourite come back king Robert Downey Jr stars as Sherlock himself and the talented Jude Law is his stalwart partner Watson. They've also thrown the impressive Rachel McAdams in there as the love interest/sidekick. Details of the plot are being kept tightly under wraps at this stage but stay posted for more updates.
Sherlock Holmes will be released in Australia on Boxing Day this year. Such a long wait but sooo worth it.

FYI during one of the fight scenes in the movie a stunt double knocked Downey Jr out. Hot damn! Talk about sacrifices for your art.

Incredibly similar

Friday, February 6, 2009

It's no secret The Incredibles is probably one of my favourite animated movies of all time. Well, it's definitely in the top three . . . .depending on the street. It has recently come to my attention that a very similar super-hero themed animated film is in the works from DreamWorks studio. To be titled Master Mind it's about a super villain who finds himself without a purpose in life after he finally succeeds in killing his heroic nemesis. So-hot-right-now comedy favourites Tina Fey, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr have signed on to voice some of the main characters. If you ask me, which since you are reading this I'm assuming you are, Master Mind reeks of crushing unoriginality. Pixar was the mastermind behind The Incredibles which was a hit at the box office and critically applauded (it scored an amazing 97% on Rotten Tomatoes). It seems blatantly obvious that DreamWorks are once again trying to soc a one-two punch to main rivals by adapting their original idea. Sigh. Both these studios are extremely talented and house some of the most creative graphic artists in the world so I wish they would stop trying to out-do each other and instead concentrate on doing what they do best; bring beautiful, unique, animated films to the big screen.
A brief history of classic copy-cat syndrome in the animation realm

Madagascar VS The Wild
Shrek VS Happily N'Ever After
Flushed Away VS Rataouille
Antz VS A Bugs Life

My musings on the Oscar nods

Friday, January 23, 2009

First of all, why the hell was The Dark Knight not nominated for best motion picture? WHY? Seriously, you can not argue that a) the dialogue is TDK is not as good, nay, better than Frost/Nixon b) the special effects and acting is not 1000 times better and more concise than all of the other nominees put together and c) TDK  in story, direction, production, editing and execution is not a more worthy nominee than Frost/Nixon, The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I understand the Academy has a tendency to neglect the obvious brilliance of films in the action adventure category but how can they honestly justify not including TDK (as a nominee at the very least)? It is a masterpiece, pure and simple. The worlds most respected and experienced film critics have all agreed on this point so why the mongoloids at the Academy couldn't take their dick out of their hands and acknowledge the same fact is beyond me. For imagery purposes only, if there was a movie heavyweight title The Curious Case of Benjamin Button would be Woody Allen and TDK would be Muhammad Ali and, naturally, it would beat that bitch into a coma. Sigh. Moving on from my original frustration, I'm quite content with the rest of the nominees in the other categories. Particularly Heath Ledger and Robert Downey Jr for best supporting actor because obviously they were both amazing. I'm also particularly happy about Penelope Cruz's nomination for best supporting actress for Vicky Cristina Barcelona as her performance was UNREAL and award worthy.

Above: Aussie lass Catherine Martin has been nominated for the best costume design Oscar for her work on Australia

I'm also happy Australia wasn't over looked like it was at the Golden Globes and got the nomination it deserved. TDK and In Bruges are some of my other favourite nominees. However, the real surprise and underdog has to be British rapper M.I.A's Oscar nomination with A.R Raham for best song written for a motion picture for `O Saya' which they wrote and produced for Slumdog Millionaire. Wow, its been a big year for M.I.A (pictured below) whose song `Paper Planes' got an awesome boost of publicity when it was used as the theme song for Pineapple Express which in turn helped put the song at #5 on the Billboard charts even though it was released six months earlier. `Paper Planes' was nominated for a Grammy for single of the year, M.I.A had a baby with her long time boyfriend and now she has been nominated for an Oscar. Wow. I certainly hope they take it out especially because rap songs (an alternative rap song at that) rarely get nominated, let alone win in this category.

Kirk Hilarious

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

You know, until I watched the press interviews on the promotional trial for Ironman, I didn't realise Robert Downey Jr was funny. I thought he was one of those Russel Crowe-types who is always serious and focused intently on the character, film and begrudgingly making it through any media commitments he has to do. However,  in the months before Tropic Thunder's released videos of Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr sparring. Funny as Stiller is, Downey Jr was hilarious. The following video was posted on Empire Magazine's website a few hours ago and it looks at Downey Jr's transformation in to Kirk Lazarus for Tropic Thunder. Note the clips where Downey Jr is talking to the camera they made me rarf and rarf and rarf.

Watch the video here.
While you're at it you should check out this genuis marketing ploy created by the execs behind Tropic Thunder. They've created an official website for the fictional character of Kirk Lazarus. Visit it here and pay particular attention to the very creative biography. Rarf-tastic.
