The 6 coolest movie characters of the last decade

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

“And that's what we're gonna be. We're gonna be cool. Now Ringo, I'm gonna count to three, and when I count three, you let go of your gun, and sit your ass down. But when you do it, you do it cool. Ready?” – Jules (Samuel L. Jackson), Pulp Fiction

When it comes to cinematic cool, Samuel L. Jackson’s character Jules from Pulp Fiction is the definition. Suffice to say super-cool movie characters don’t come around every day, but when they do, they leave an impression. It takes a brilliantly scripted character and a stellar performance from the actor to pull off a smooth operator on screen. Here are six of my personal standouts from the last decade:

Sands, Once Upon A Time In Mexico (2003)

He may be known for his quirky and original characters, but Johnny Depp’s turn as the sarcastic, slightly neurotic FBI agent Sands in Once Upon A Time In Mexico is unforgettable. With his trademark sunnies, Michael Jackson gloves and who-gives-a-fuck attitude, Sands oozes charisma. I mean, the man has his eyes cut out and he still manages to hook up with Eva Mendes, shoot a bunch of bad guys and call a cab driver a “fuck-mook.” Director and Movie Mazzupial favourite Robert Rodriguez is known for creating stylish and cool films, yet Sands is like the embodiment of his cinematic mantra. Plus, he has some of the best throwaway lines such as “Are you a Mexican or a Mexican’t?”

Hit Girl, Kick-Ass (2010)
Parenting groups were up in arms over Chloe Grace Mortez’s portrayal of Hit Girl/Mindy Macready; the 11-year-old mass murdering, potty mouthed superhero from Kick-Ass. Unlike so many god awful superhero movies, the character of Hit Girl remained true to its origins in the graphic novel written by Mark Millar and illustrated by John Romita Jr. Preferring a bench made model 42 butterfly knife over a Bratz movie-star make over Sasha doll, Hit Girl is the epitome of cool; saving the day on more than one occasion and killing more than her fair share of bad guys in a suitably bloody fashion. Like a cross between Mini Me and The Bride, Hit Girl is more than comfortable dropping the c-bomb and “fucking” with people, thus making her the coolest 11-year-old ever.

Black Dynamite, Black Dynamite (2009)
A parody of every Blaxploitation character ever, Michael Jai White starred as the title character in the film he wrote with friends Byron Minns and Scott Sanders. When `the man’ kills his only brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages and starts shrinking the male anatomy through malt liquor, there’s only one brother bad enough to unravel the conspiracy: Black Dynamite. And so, we are introduced to one of the coolest on-screen characters in recent times who can seduce any woman in sight, defeat the entire population of Kung-Fu Island and take on a num-chuck wielding Richard Nixon. Robert Downey Jr’s Sergeant Lincoln Osiris via Kirk Lazarus from Tropic Thunder looks like a private schoolboy compared to White’s superb and often shirtless portrayal of Black Dynamite. Treading the fine line between parody and pandemonium, he has created the epitome of cool with so many quotable lines you can see a legion of males trading impressions whilst gathered around the water cooler at work. The highlight being “First lady, I’m sorry I pimp slapped you into that China cabinet . . . I use excessive force.”

Bang Bang, The Brothers Bloom (2009)
They say silence is golden and in the case of Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi) from The Brothers Bloom, this is definitely the case. As the classy explosives expert in the conman team she has some of the best moments in the film, all without uttering a single word. With no dialogue, it is to Kikuchi’s credit she is able to create a quirky and ridiculously cool criminal whose trademark is to make bombs out of Barbie dolls. Even Kikuchi’s Oscar-nominated role in Babel doesn’t hold a candle to the infinite coolness of Bang Bang.

Eric Knox, Charlie’s Angels (2000)
Sure, not an obvious choice, especially when the always-impressive Sam Rockwell spent the first half of the movie as the bumbling and shy I.T expert Eric Knox. But once the veil is lifted and Knox’s true identity as the villain is revealed, things take a turn for the better. Few actors would have been able to moonwalk to Pharoahe Monch’s Simon Says with as much smoothness as Rockwell, who does it with a cigarette in his mouth and a skip in his step. His performances in movies such as Moon, Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind, Choke and Frost/Nixon may be more superior dramatically, but when he is on screen as Eric Knox Charlie’s Angels are about as interesting as the three chipmunks.

Elle Driver, Kill Bill: Vol 1 & 2 (2003, 2004)
Daryl Hannah’s most famous role as the mermaid from Splash was altogether annihilated when she picked up the Samurai sword for the deliciously evil and sadistic character of Elle Driver aka California Mountain Snake in the Kill Bill films. The seven dwarves could have never guessed the term `whistle while you work’ could be utilised by such a lethal mistress in the hospital scene when she sports a naughty nurse outfit and a matching eye-patch. With a cup of crazy, a sprinkling of deadly skills, a pinch of dry wit and eight parts cool, Hannah’s atrocious performance in the floptastic Shark Swarm in 2008 can almost be forgiven for the character of Elle Driver. Her best moment? Cooly getting out her notebook and reading off a series of facts about the Black Mamba while her former colleague Budd is squirming on the ground after being bitten by the snake she planted in his brief case. “Now, you should listen to this, 'cause this concerns you. The amount of venom that can be delivered from a single bite can be gargantuan. You know, I've always liked that word... ”gargantuan"... so rarely have an opportunity to use it in a sentence.”
Yes, cool almost seems like an understatement. Ice cold bitch would probably be more appropriate.

Honourable mentions: Morpheus from The Matrix trilogy, Miho from Sin City, Brendan from Brick, Frozone from The Incredibles, Big Daddy from Kick-Ass, Lt. Aldo Raine from Inglorious Basterds, Mickey from Snatch, Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Legolas from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, Jack Sparrow from The Pirates Of The Carribean trilogy, Mr. Fox from Fantastic Mr. Fox.

First look at Machete

Saturday, November 7, 2009

The above, dear readers, is the first look at Jessica Alba's character, Sartana, in Robert Rodriguez's Machete, an adaptation of his fake trailer at the start of the Grindhouse movies. The pic was taken by ComingSoon.net at the the American Film Market (AFM) and although a tad dodgy, it's an exciting peek at what the highly anticipated Machete will look like. From this scrap of an image, I'm thinking a new take on Once Upon A Time In Mexico which excites me to no end. For those of you who have been in a coma for the past few months, the basic storyline is a homage to exploitation films of the 60s and 70s. ComingSoon.net break the plot down as follows;

"Machete (Danny Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal). Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz (Jeff Fahey) to assassinate McLaughlin (Robert De Niro) a corrupt Senator. Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Cheech Marin) his "holy" brother, and April (Lindsay Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger."

Paper Machete

Monday, July 20, 2009

You can file this under strictly rumour for the time being, however, there have been some exciting 'leaks' regarding the cast for Robert Rodriguez’s Machete. For those of you playing at home, Machete is the latest project from Movie Mazzupial’s favouritist director in all the land and is an expansion of a faux trailer Rodriguez created to play at the start of Grindhouse. Like the spoof trailer, the feature film adaptation will pay homage to exploitation films of the 60s and 70s, probably in a similar fashion to the awesome Black Dynamite reviewed below. Rodriguez originally came up with the idea whilst filming Desperado and wanting to create a Mexican Jean-Claude Van Damme. It has taken until now to get the idea off the ground and into production, with there being no shortage of hype surrounding the project. The latest and most reliable tid-bit comes from a Bloody-Disgusting.com contributor who revealed the four main cast members as being *drum roll please*:
Danny Trejo

Okay, so I started with the biggest unsurprise ever as its common knowledge (to all with a cranium) that Trejo is taking up the title roll of Machete. A Rodriguez regular, the character and film were created around Trejo and his signature, erm, charm.
Michelle Rodriguez
Robert’s twin sister Michelle is said to be playing the character of Luz. I should point out here the above is a lie and despite the last name, the action-babe is in no way related to Mr Rodriguez . . .that we know of.
Jonah Hill Everyone’s favourite Seth Rogen doppelganger is tipped for the role of Julio.
Robert De Niro
To conclude the cast gossip with a bang, the legend De Niro will star as Senator McLaughlin in the film which, in my humble opinion, is quite unlike anything he has done before. Ballsy.
So, if the above cast info turns out to be true – what an amazing ensemble! All very different actors with very different backgrounds, this should make for an exciting collaboration. Speaking of collaborations, Rodriguez will be co-directing the picture with Ethan Maniquis who has worked with Rod-man as editor on a bunch of his past films (Planet Terror, Sin City and the upcoming Shorts). Machete has a release date for sometime in 2010 but for those wanting a taste of what to expect I suggest you watch the spoof trailer (below) where it all began.

Easy on The Spirit's

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Saw the highly anticipated The Spirit.
Reviews have been positively terrible and box office earnings in the US glum. The Spirit is about rookie cop Denny Colt who returns from beyond the grave as The Spirit, a hero whose mission is to fight against the bad forces in Central City. The cast is wicked cool with Gabriel Macht as the title character, Eva Mendes as Sand Saref, Jaime King as Lorelei Rox, Stana Katic as Morgenstern, Samuel L Jackson as super-villian The Octopus and Scarlett Johansson as evil sidekick Silken Floss aka the best name ever.

Consensus? The plot is ridiculous. The dialogue is as corny as a crate of Dorritos. The action scenes are laughable. Infact, my instincts are telling me it’s a bad film but I just can’t help love it. The whole film is kitsch beyond belief and is essentially so bad, it’s good. Don’t get me wrong, the visuals are beautiful. The Spirit is ingeniously brilliant to look at and goes beyond the initial groundwork seen in Sincity. Frank Miller is the director and people will be more familiar with him due to his reputation as a ground breaking graphic novelist. His version of Batman titled The Dark Knight Returns is largely credited with reinvigorating the winged crusaders comic book series and graphic novels Sincity and 300 were both hugely popular and spawned film adaption’s. I honestly don’t know how Frank Miller was able to sell the concept of The Spirit to studios because the ridiculousness of it obviously stems from the source material. I put down the films existence down to Miller’s previous work doing so well on the big screen. This definitely has the feel of an exploitation film and the trademarks are there: deadly babes toting deadly weapons, indulgent action sequences and an insane plot. Therefore I can understand why mainstream audiences and critics wouldn’t respond to this, the same way they didn’t respond to Grindhouse products Planet Terror and Death Proof. The only lyrical song featured in the film is called Falling In Love Again and is belted out by Christina Agulira who gives a seductive, Marilyn Monroe-esque performance during the end credits. Importantly, Miller also gives a shout out to Robert Rodriguez in the `thank-you’ credits (Movie Mazzupial #1 favourite director) who taught Miller how to direct and operate camera equipment. For a good laugh and sheer entertainment value I recommend The Spirit. Be sure to leave a portion of your brain at the door though and don’t question the dialogue! Notable mentions also need to go to the costume designer because the outfits of the femme fatales are mind-blowing (just like Mendes and Johansson’s lady humps).

Note: I also adore the fact that Miller credits the cat that appears in the film as Arthur the Cat: Himself in the credits.

Best Lines:
The Spirit (to Octopus): I'm gonna kill you all kinds of dead.

Comissioner Dolan: Is every goddamn woman in this goddamn hell hole out of her goddamn mind?
Morgensten: No, sir. We're just equipped.

Sin Cities (plural)

Monday, November 10, 2008

Is it Christmas already? No, we're still in November. Then how can all my dreams be coming true? The dreams that exclude Mark Wahlberg from proposing to me that is . . . .

Anyway, the god of awesome has totally smiled upon me due to the news Robert Rodriguez is writing and directing two more Sin City films. TWO! For those of you born in the last six seconds, Rodriguez is just my FAVOURITE DIRECTOR EVER! Needless to say Sin City is also one of my favourite films and it went on to revolutionize the way movies are shot. Films like 300, Speed Racer and The Spirit are a few who have taken a lot from Sin City.If you don't know what Sin City is about you don't deserve to live. Okay, a little harsh maybe but it's that brilliant everyone should know. Adapted from a graphic novel written and drawn by the legendary Frank Miller, Sin City tells multiple stories of the inhabitants of Basin City - a dark, dangerous, neo-noir town. Miller directed, wrote and produced the original along with Rodriguez. Rodriguez's BFF Quentin Tarantino also guest-directed a scene or three. Although Sin City isn't scheduled to be released until 2010, a cast of colossal calibre has signed on for the sequel. The following is a brief list;

Clive Owen is Dwight McCarthy --from original
Mickey Rourke is Marv --from original
Jessica Alba is Nancy Callahan --from original
Rosario Dawson is Gail --from original
Rose McGowan is Ava Lord (rumoured)
Michael Clarke Duncan is Manute --from original
Jamie King is Goldie/ Wendy --from original
Brittany Murphy is Shellie --from original
Antonio Banderas is ??? (rumoured)
Devon Aoki is Miho --from original
Danny Trejo is ??? (rumoured)
Powers Boothe is Senator Roark--from original
As you can see most of the surviving characters from the original Sin City are reprising their roles as well as appearances from Rodriguez regulars Danny Trejo, Antonio Banderas and the smokin Rose McGowan. The plot follows one of the later graphic novels and delves further in to the past of Dwight and Marv as well as the present of the other characters. Rodriguez is commonly known as the `one man film crew' because of how he has a hand in all aspects of the film making process. Just as he did in Sin City he will be behind the cinematography, directing, producing, editing, writing and the music for Sin City 2. What a legend. Seriously.

If the above news isn't enough to get your juices going, Miller and Rodriguez are all aboard for Sin City 3 which is scheduled for release in 2011. This film will be based around the story of an ex-Navy SEAL named Wallace who saves a young woman, Esther, from killing herself. After a night on the town, she's kidnapped by mysterious people and so on and so forth. Johnny Depp is rumoured to have already signed on to play Wallace but no other cast details have come to light.
Santa is awesome.

Six on the beach

Friday, September 19, 2008

For no other reason besides the fact I can, I’ve complied a list of my top six favourite directors. If I provided explanations behind my choices this post would probably end up three times the size of `The Power of Levitt-ation’ and nobody wants to go through that. The following are in no particularly order and I’ve also included a few notable mentions of directors I love but not as much as those featured in the top six. Some, like Ben Affleck and Rian Johnson still have to prove themselves but from their debut directorial offerings I’m a fan.
Movie Mazzupial’s Top Six Favourite Directors
Robert Rodriguez
Tim Burton
Hayao Miyazaki Terrence Malick Quentin Tarantino
Ang Lee

Honourable mentions: Guillermo del Toro, Clint Eastwood, Brad Bird, Wes Craven, Chris Nolan, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Jackson, Rian Johnson, Tim Robbins and Ben Affleck.

I'll have the McGowan meal thanks

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

I've had quite a few comments from friends and colleagues since I did a blog with the movie posters for Robert Rodriguez's latest project Red Sonja. Most of those comments were about Rose McGowan's mega yumminess. Sooo I decided to give all you McGowan fans out there something to squeal over and pay homage to the actress with more attitude than Ice T and Grace Jones combined. Here are my top three favourite McGowan performances:
3. Courtney Alice Shayne
Jawbreaker (1999) McGowan's attitude and X factor are put to full use in this black teen comedy which sees the girls in the popular group accidently kill their BFF in a birthday prank gone wrong. Courtney Shayne is one of the most underrated bitches in cinema history and McGowan plays her to perfection. Everyone else in the cast pales in comparison to McGowan who is the ultimate femme fatale, using her sex appeal and wit to manipulate those around her. The only thing more ridiculous than the fact the audience are supposed to believe these 27-year old’s are teenagers are the corsets and leather Courtney wears to school. She is the ultimate mean girl and other high school Queen Bees have nothing on Miss Shayne.
Best line:
“I killed Liz. I killed the teen dream. Deal with it.”

2. Tatum Riley
Scream (1996)
A testament to McGowan's ability to hold her own in a cast alongside some of the biggest names in nineties Hollywood. While initial attention may have been drawn to the clever plot, sharp script and tongue-in-cheek performances who can forget Sidney Prescott's loyal best friend Tatum Riley. Not only does she have some of the best one liners in the film (“Billy and his penis don't deserve you Syd”) she also has one of the best deaths (garage doors+Tatum =gnarly!). While some people are always cast as the `token black guy' it seems McGowan is always cast as the `knowing slut with attitude' and she pulls it off well as a buxom blonde.
Best line:
“No, please don't kill me, Mr. Ghostface, I wanna be in the sequel!”
1. Cherry Darling
Planet Terror (2007)
I may be a little biased to pick this as my favourite McGowan performance because I'm a Rodriguez whore but honestly, she gets to do what she does best and that's deliver her natural blend of comedy and sass. McGowan plays Cherry Darling, a stripper who has just quit her night-job to pursue a career as a stand up comedian. Anyways, some zombies rip her leg off and her ex replaces it with a machine gun. Awesome much? In the style of some of the greatest exploitation films ever made violence, sex, horror and comedy ensue as Cherry and her machine gun stump blast their way through the movie. Only McGowan would be able to make an amputee one of the sexiest characters on screen in 2007. Notably, her comedic turns are still effective against a back drop of zombies whose genitals explode.
Best line:
There's so many, sigh, so here are a few of the best . . . .

“Useless talent number 66. I'm very pliable.”

Cherry: Name's Cherry Darling...
El Wray: Sounds like a stripper name.
Cherry: No, it sounds like a go-go dancer name. There's a difference.

“I am not leaving you here like this. Motherfuckers around here eat road kill.”

El Wray: So what are you going to do now?
Cherry: I'm going to be a stand-up comedian.
El Wray: You're not funny.
Cherry: That's what I keep trying to tell everybody but they all say I'm hilarious.
El Wray: But you're not.
Cherry: There's a difference between being frank. . .and being dick.

They say red heads do it better . . .

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Two potential movie posters for the 2009 release Red Sonja sprouted up on the internet a few days ago and there’s been no shortage of hype surrounding Robert Rodriguez’s latest venture. When news that a film was to be made based around the Marvel Comics character, Red Sonja, it raised a fair few eyebrows. But I have to say these nifty pieces of graphic art have got me hooked (either that or I’m afraid the red head will stab me). Rose McGowan is looking hot, hot, hot as the sword wielding she-devil.

Red Sonja first appeared as a side character in the Conan the Barbarian/Adventurer/Raving homosexual comics before branching out in her own series. If the posters are anything to go by (which I say they are) then McGowan’s Red Sonja looks likely to surpass Angelica Bridges god-awful version of the character played in the 80s TV series Conan the Adventurer. Plus McGowan’s costume doesn’t look like it was bought from `Dominatrix’s R Us’ so brownie points for that one. There was also a film adaption of Red Sonja in 1985 with the title character played by Brigitte Nielsen accompanied by the heavily tanned and bulging Arnold Schwarzenegger. Again I use the term god-awful to describe this cinematic effort.

The last time Rodriguez and McGowan paired up was for the hugely entertaining but financial flop Planet Terror. No doubt the real-life lovers are hoping Red Sonja will make more of an impact at the box office. Anyway, the talented and slightly scary Djimon Hounsou will be playing the other lead role of Thusla Doom while Douglas Aarniokoski is up to direct. But never fear! Although you mightn’t have heard of Aarniokoski before, he has worked with Rodriguez on majority of his films as first or second assistant director etc etc. The main draw card for me here is with Rodriguez on board, the action scenes are bound to be spectacular and well executed. He’s also one of the few directors in Hollywood who has his actors perform majority of their own stunts so McGowan better get used to lugging that pointy stick around otherwise someone just might lose an eye! Or boob! Stay posted for more Red Sonja pics and news.
