Flood is thicker than water

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

This is just a very brief message to say all those affected by the devastating Queensland floods, my thoughts are with you. I’ve pulled a 14 hour shift at work today to cover the breaking news surrounding this crisis and I’m truly blown away by the magnitude of the situation which, if forecasts are to be believed, is going to get worse in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

In 2005 my family and I lost everything we owned, literally everything, in a flood that although devastating, was of a considerably smaller magnitude to what people are experiencing in Brisbane and Toowoomba at the moment. But if the heartbreaking stories over the past 24 hours have taught me anything, it’s that the loss of possessions and even your home is nothing compared to losing your life or the life of a loved one. To the 12 already confirmed dead and the 56 still missing, my prayers are with you.

In the mean time, to everyone affected, please stay safe and be sensible. Dear friend Rick at The Ambiguity Report has been evacuated and surviving on only his wine and smokes (biggest unsurprise ever) but the legend is still managing to post regular updates on his experiences here and on his Twitter account. They’re worth a read.
