Opening up: Kerry Katona, seen outside her house today, and her estranged husband Mark Croft, who has admitted he squandered her fortune

Kerry Katona's estranged husband Mark Croft spoke out today about their break-up, admitting that he squandered her fortune.

His comments came on the same day Kerry lifted the lid on the agony of breaking up with first husband Brian McFadden.

As the 29-year-old singer tries to reinvent herself after 'dark days' of drug abuse and erratic public behaviour, ex-cabbie Croft said he planned to fight her 'tooth and nail' for custody of their two young children.

Croft, 38, who is sleeping at friends' houses and trying to make money from a new slot machine business, admitted: 'Yes. I've spent Kerry's millions - and I don't miss a penny of it, or feel any regret about how our marriage failed.

'I'm no saint. I've done drugs, booze, wasted her fortune, you name it. All I want now is to see my kids. Without them, my life isn't worth living.

'I'm living on beans on toast and cheap cereal, and counting every penny. But I'm not looking for sympathy from anyone. Yes, I've been an idiot but I am trying to do the right thing for my kids.

'I'm skint, which is entirely my own fault. But I'll fight Kerry tooth and nail over the only thing that matters to me now. God knows where I'll find the money but, mark my words, I will.'

Ignoring the stories: Kerry put on a brave face as she collected her oldest daughters from Holyhead Port; they came back on the ferry after volcanic ash cancelled their flights following a trip to visit their Irish family

He has two children with Kerry - Heidi, three, and two-year-old Max - and she has two other children - Molly, eight, and Lilly-Sue, seven - with first husband McFadden.

She is planning to move out of the Wilmslow mansion she shared with Croft, relocating the family to Sussex so she can be near her new management team.

But Croft told The People newspaper the move would be a disaster, both for her and their children. He said: 'I now face a four-hour drive each way every other weekend, down to some poncy part of Sussex, where Kerry and her new advisers have decided she can reinvent herself.

New job: After the end of his marriage, Croft has started his own business managing fruit machines

'People think they can control Kerry and change her but no one can. She's her own person and does whatever she wants.

'Although Heidi and Max are still very young they also have their own friends and family around them up here. But now they are being snatched away from everyone they know.

'I read she thinks I'm a good dad. If that's the case, why is she moving them to the other end of the country?'

His comment will do nothing but harm the careful charm offensive that Kerry's new management team, Can Associates, has been waging.

In an interview published today the singer reveals the pain of her break-up with McFadden. And she accuses the Westlife singer of being a bad father, claiming that he speaks to his daughters Molly and Lilly-Sue about five times a year - on the phone.

She told the News Of The World: 'He phones the girls about five times a year but Lilly doesn't really know who he is. I've never told them what really happened.'

Kerry reveals how McFadden cheated on her during his stag night, and that she was devastated when he dumped her for Australian singer Delta Goodrem, with whom he now lives in Australia.

Looming battle: Kerry Katona with her youngest children Heidi and Max; Father Mark croft has vowed to fight her 'tooth and nail' for custody

Kerry and McFadden wed in 2002 but the marriage was almost over before it began, when Kerry learned Brian had cheated with a lapdancer days before they tied the knot.

She said: 'That killed it for me. I loved Brian and I trusted him. I remember thinking, "But he's the fat one from Westlife. Why would he do this to me?".'

They already had daughter Molly, and Kerry soon fell pregnant with Lilly-Sue. She said: 'I thought we could work through it but, after Lilly was born, Brian told me he didn't love me. I didn't know it then but he'd met Delta.'

She also remembers the first time she met the 'other woman' when she took the girls to meet McFadden and Goodrem.

She said: 'I remember thanking God I'd dressed up because this vision with a perfect figure, white shiny teeth, and a beautiful complexion was next to him. She was about a foot taller than me and I felt like a piece of rubbish.'

On the town: Kerry and her mother Sue after a party in Warrington on Friday

'I was so nervous all I said was, "Hiya love, are you all right?" - this to the woman who had taken my husband

'Brian has a new life in Australia now. I'm notbitter, I'm just sad for him. He;s missing out on two amazing little girls.'

But Kerry is angry about McFadden's public comments about her, adding: 'Whenever I'm in trouble he lays into me.'

McFadden branded her behaviour 'disgusting' and an ' embarrassment' after reports that she enjoyed three-day cocaine binges with Croft.

But Kerry said: 'Just because I did drugs didn't mean I was a bad mum in every sense. I love my kids, I do their homework with them, bath them, pick them up from school. Brian isn't interested like that.'

Ironically echoing Croft's own claims of being a flawed but 'good' parent, she added: 'I've got so much to be ashamed of but I'm going to prove I'm worth another chance. I won't let my children down again.'
