Melissa and the Mad Man – Feig confirms he’s working on comedy for Melissa McCarthy and Jon Hamm

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Bridesmaids director Paul Feig has exclusively confirmed with Movie Mazzupial that his new comedy is for Melissa McCarthy and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm (above). At least, so he hopes. I just finished up a phone interview with Feig less than an hour ago and the man himself has confirmed the news. When asked about his next project and what he could tell us, Feig had this to say:

“Well, it was supposed to be under wraps and then I got up this morning and saw on Deadline that I was developing it with Mel and Jon and was like `oh well, okay.’ They’re not officially attached yet, but that they’re my inspiration. I'm writing it for them and it’s purely speculative . . .but true. If I could do it with them that would be perfect, but it could be other actors if they’re not available."

Feig went on to say the unnamed comedy is indeed an unconventional love story and that he’s already sold it to Universal, with Apatow attached to produce. Feig will write and direct. The Freaks and Geeks co-creator went on to say he’s a big fan of Cary Grant and old Hollywood comedies, hence his love of Hamm.
“That’s why I love working with Hamm, he’s like the new Cary Grant."

Stay tuned for my full interview with Feig tomorrow. Bridesmaids is currently screening.

Passive aggressive notes 101

Sunday, May 15, 2011

I have this friend who for the sake of anonymity we shall call Tricky Hickson. You can follow her on Twitter here. Anyway, these pricks in her apartment building let down her tires the other day because, well, pricks are pricks. She put this hilarious note on their car. I’m a big fan of Passive Aggressive Notes but frankly, this kicks anything I’ve seen on their site in the gonads. Enjoy:

Thank you for letting all four of my tyres down. I understand the fastest way to ensure my car is moved from your spot is to make my vehicle immobile. Genius. The reason I took your spot was because mine was in fact also taken so I understand the earth-ending soul-crushing hysteria that would have ensued upon discovering your spot was taken. I too felt the pain. But did I let the tyres down on the car of the P-plater that took my spot? No, because I am not an asshole who would deem the slight inconvenience of having their precious car space taken to warrant vandalising someone else’s car, especially a resident of the same building who parks directly across from you each day. Awkward. I suppose you are lucky I am not the vengeful type seen as I obviously know where you park. I’d like to apologise that out the hundreds of free spaces, I chose to park in the space of some bat-shit crazy fucktard. Have an awesome day asshole.

Love, your neighbour x

Stop, Mjöllnir time

Thursday, May 5, 2011

If for some miraculous reason you haven’t heard the news you must be a) deaf or b) Osama Bin Laden. Anyway, the exciting juice is that I’m going to be quoted on the Thor movie poster! FREAKIN’ THOR! Paramount contacted me about it last week and after I hastily gave my approval (which went something like Me: “Of course you fucking can!” Them: *chuckle*) I wen t about shouting the news to the world. I tried getting it on News Of The World, but they didn't bite. I don’t know what exact quote they’re going to use or when the new praise posters are going up and out . . .but I will keep you posted. I always thought my first time quoted on a movie poster would be for some indie horror film only I liked, so there you go. I give good quote.

In the meantime, this gives me the perfect excuse to share the above genius piece of poster art from Dave Williams. It’s a minimalist version of the Thor poster and put simply, it rocks.

Movie Mazz gets disgusting

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

(Above) Me, on the weekend, as a Bloody Bride to a friend’s B themed 21st. I lost my Bjork costume.

But in a good way, I promise! To readers of this blog it’s no secret I’m a huge horror buff. So it’s with huge excitement I can reveal I’m now a contributor for Bloody Disgusting.com, the world’s most popular horror movie website! In fact, I believe they call me their Australian correspondent but that tends to have Crocodile Dundee connotations so I will stick with contributor.

I guess life really does come full circle. When I was in Grade 9, high school, I got in trouble in English class for looking at BloodyDisgusting.com I believe my teacher said it “wasn’t appropriate” which, of course, made me an even bigger fan.

If you don’t already check their site regularly *scold* I tweet my stories regularly and you can follow me here.

Here’s a collection of my yarns so far:
-Charisma Carpenter on Sibling Rivalry
-Denis O'Hare talks American Horror Story
-Bad Behaviour trailer
-Charisma Carpenter on Human Target
-Katee Sackhoff on Growl
-Katee Sackhoff on Haunting In Georgia

I've also got a Scream 4 review and interviews with Snoop Dogg and Tom Felton to be posted on there soon, so stay tuned.

Religion 101

Sunday, March 20, 2011

Me: I just thought it was kind of ironic they asked me to write for a Catholic newsletter when I’m technically an atheist.

Granddad: Don’t say that wee friend.

Me: It’s true. All religions are branches of the same tree anyway. Same dude, different name.

Granddad: *silence*

Me: All religion has ever done is cause war, poverty and grief.

Granddad: *long pause* You’re not supposed to know that . . . .

Yes we Cannes!

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

(Above) Honestly, I'll take any excuse to post a picture of Marc-Andre Grondin. The boy is fine.
Okay, so I know this is some gratuitous self-promotion but . . .I really, really want to cover the prestigious Cannes film festival! I’ve entered the Blockbuster Super Blogger competition where at the end of March, two entrants are selected to be flown to France and cover the event. Hot, freakin’ damn people! That’s an awesome prize! So what I’m asking is this; I’ve set up a Movie Mazz account and I need y’all to click HERE as often as you can to give me page hits and, if you feel that way inclined, a comment or ten. If you do, I promise that if I win I’ll bring you back a beret. Or something really cool and French, like Marion Cotillard. Or Marc-Andre Grondin.

In conclusion, HIT me with you best shot please. I will be posting hardcore, shameless self-promotiony reminders regularly so be prepared.

Merci*

*See! That's how deserving I am! I even speak French!

Movie Mazzupial's 10 best films of 2010

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Okay, okay, I’ve dangled the carrot long enough. This has been a week of movie lists; the best soundtracks of 2010, best movie posters of 2010, worst films of 2010 and gold star films of 2010 (I'd post the links to these articles, but if you're too lazy to scroll down the page then you don't deserve to read them *hmph*). Of course they were all a precursor to the big one – my list of top 10 movies of 2010. Without further ado, let the countdown begin . . .
10 - A Single Man
9 - Fantastic Mr Fox
8 - Centurion
7 - Boy
6 - Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
5 - The Princess and the Frog
4 - In The Loop
3 - Kick-Ass
2 - The Fighter

To look back on 2009 with reflective indignation, dig my best and worst lists.

Book, line and sinker

My New Year’s resolution for 2010 was to read more books and since I graduated uni, there was simply no reason to feel guilty reading a book for leisure when I should be reading a textbook. I also joined a book club where we don't exactly have a set book each month, but rather we share whatever we have read with the group and swap books. So I kept track of the titles and decided to post the list come year’s end, for better or worse. With my resolution still undecided for next year, here’s the list of titles I read this year, with stars next to the ones I re-read because they were just so darn enjoyable. In no particular order:

1st To Die-James Patterson

So there you have it. It's 54 books all up . . .well, I think, because I keep trying to recount it and then I get bored. Pretty much one a week and next year I'm going to be keeping a list again, which I will update monthly. I plan on trying to get through a bit more literature. I got a Borders voucher from my family for Christmas and already have a handy list to start off with come tomorrow, in no particular order: 1984 - George Orwell, The Scarecrow - Michael Connelly, Lonely Werewolf Girl - Martin Millar, The Bone Collector - Jeffrey Deaver, Torment - Lauren Kate. And from the lovely ladies at book club: the whole Chronicles Of Narnia series and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Seth Grahame-Smith.

Guest post: Jurassic parking mad

Monday, December 27, 2010

With the end of the year approaching faster than Lindsay Lohan’s untimely death, I’ve finally done something I’ve been dying to do since starting Movie Mazzupial – a blog swap. And who better to do it with than the fabulously talented Rick over at The Ambiguity Report. Rickis (or Rigor Morton as he’s also known) and I have known each other since we were both teenagers working in the same newsroom together. He’s shown me great things over the years, like how to actually form a proper sentence, how to make cool shapes with cigarette smoke, how not-to-drink wine and the llama video. He’s one of the main reasons I started Movie Mazzupial, as I was a huge fan of his first blog You Might Want To Sit Down For This, and it was he who first encouraged me to start my own where I too could rant about things I love and am passionate about – movies. Little did he know he would also have to guide my technologically retarded hand through every technical aspect of starting a blog, but I like to think of that as a developmental stage in our friendship.

So, after he sold his soul to *insert company name here* and had to turn the life support off on his blog, he thankfully came back bigger and gayer with
The Ambiguity Report. He’s only a few months in to blogging again and already his posts on gay marriage and asylum seekers have been featured on media mega-sites like Mamma Mia (the latter becoming the sites most shared article on Facebook ever, which is huuuuuge). Anywho, all of this is my long and convoluted way of saying there is no one I would rather do a blog swap with and I hope you enjoy his highly amusing account of his obsession with one of the greatest blockbusters ever – Jurassic Park.

Not pictured: Rick's credibility.

I’m just going to come right out and be honest.

I thought Jurassic Park was a documentary far beyond any reasonable age for a child to think a movie about dinosaurs was a documentary. I thought it perfectly normal that a dinosaur-themed park welcoming its first batch of visitors would want the entire experience filmed, even after the velociraptors began acting like total bitches.

I was at least 5, possibly six as the movie (released in cinemas 1993) had just come out on the venerable VHS at the local video store and my cousins had insisted I would enjoy it. I watched the shit out of that movie, I assure you. I studied the locations to see if I could guess where in the world it had been filmed so I could somehow convince my parents to buy me a ticket.

This was my desire even after most of the guests on the island were mauled by tons of carnivorous beasts.

Seeing the brachiosaurus for the first time I felt exactly how Elle Sattler and Alan Grant would have felt, had they been real characters and not actors. I saw that dinosaur rear up on its hind legs and practically threw my popcorn bowl in my cousin’s face, wide-eyed with wonder.

This. Changes. Everything.

Some background. I liked dinosaurs. I temporarily thought I was one after a routine doctor’s appointment for some kind of needle. I thought I had fooled both the doctor and my mother by pretending I was a tyrannosaurus rex, based on the flawless logic that dinosaurs do not, in fact, need vaccinations. I believed the doctor might realise the error of his ways, shake his head and say something like ‘I don’t need to immunise this t-rex, what a ridiculous man I am being today’.
I was given the needle anyway but, not wanting to give my mother the satisfaction of an immunology victory, I pretended to be the king of beasts for another two days in some misguided attempt to prove her wrong. My ruse was eventually blown when she threw me the entire leg of a dead cow and insisted that I eat some of it. Cover blown.

So to say I was obsessed with dinosaurs was an understatement.

Sitting through Jurassic Park, I was outraged that some people (mostly the ones who got eaten, saps) wanted to close the park down. I was firmly on the side of beardface whose name I could not remember when I was six but which I now know is John Hammond. The park needed to remain open, if only so I could travel there and take some photos of the goat bait.

I briefly considered writing a letter of support to beardface and the board members of InGen, which would have contained but a simple message.

Dear InGen. If you close Jurassic Park you will make the dinosaurs go extinct again. I do not want this to happen. If this does happen I hope a raptor eats your face right off. Yours sincerely, Rick.

I remember vaguely the first time I realised that Jurassic Park was just a movie and not, as it turns out, a snuff documentary with dinosaurs. I don’t remember who clued me in on the secret but I remember clearly wanting to fire them out of a cannon and directly into the sun for ruining what had been a tremendous fantasy-turned-reality for me.

And that’s why Jurassic Park will forever be my favourite movie, though of course others come close for other reasons. This one came along at a time in my life when I truly believed it was possible to have your leg gnawed off at the knee by a 14m long Rex.

That’s something I will never, can never, have back.

Say cheeeeeese.

For my post on the best gay movie characters, head over to The Ambiguity Report.

Movie Mazzupial's best movie soundtracks of 2010

Sunday, December 26, 2010

Lists! I love lists! Which is why I particularly love this time of year because lists on the best insert-something-here’s of the year are dished out across the interwebs and I go into a geeky, reflective coma. So although the final preparations are still being made to my 10 best films of the year list (it posts Friday, fittingly on the last day of 2010) expect a swag of lists this week as I look back at the worst films of the year, the gold star-worthy films, best movie posters AND this – my pick of the best movie soundtracks of the year. Prepare to agree to disagree.

Tron: Legacy

The iconic, robotic and electronic duo Daft Punk clearly found their dream project when it came to scoring Tron: Legacy. Their mechanised and digital soundtrack to the Disney film sees them extend beyond their usual shtick thanks to the use of an 85-strong orchestra. My only gripe is the songs, though climatic and beautifully arranged, are too short with most well under the three minute mark.
Standout track: Tron Legacy (End Titles) – Daft Punk

Fantastic Mr. FoxCould you make a more Wes Andersoney soundtrack? I mean, really? The answer is no, no you couldn’t. Hence this is why, once you wipe all the H&M scarf-wearing hipster germs off it, the Fantastic Mr. Fox soundtrack really is quite, erm, fantastic due to a cocktail of original score tracks from the always impressive Alexandre Desplat and lyrical songs from the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys and, of course, Jarvis Cocker.
Standout track: Fantastic Mr. Fox aka Petey’s Song – Jarvis Cocker

BurlesqueAlong with The Fighter and Tangled, this falls into the category of soundtracks which are out now (or nowish) while the film doesn’t dock until January. That doesn’t take away any of its fabulousness though, and I do mean fabulousness. From a Cher power ballad to yet another beautiful Sia and Agulira collaboration, the Burlesque soundtrack may only be 10 tracks long, but every one of them hits like the strength of Christina Agulira’s castrating vocals. Standout track? Ha! There’s too many to choose from, but the highlights definitely are Cher’s When You’re Good To Mama -esque Welcome To Burlesque, Agulira’s train track dirty grind on Tough Lover and the flashy Express. But at the end of day, the winner is *drum roll* the potentially Golden Globe-winning best original song Bound To You courtesy of a Sia and Agulira collab.
Standout track: Bound To You –Christina Agulira

The Kids Are All RightFor a film about lesbians, this is anything but hasbian thanks to a soundtrack as deliciously sunny and indie as the film. I will argue my point through the following artist buffet – David Bowie, Fever Ray, Joni Mitchell, Little Dragon, Uh Huh Her, Fever Ray. So there.
Standout track: Sundown Syndrome - Tame Impala

The Princess and the FrogDisney returned to their 2D animated magic with this flick, released in Australia mid-January, and the stellar soundtrack really brought it home. Dreamgirls Anika Noni Rose stepped up from backing singer to full-throttle dynamo with her vocals on standard Disney fairytale ballads while legend Randy Newman brought that New Orleans authenticity to the soundtrack. Even RnB lad Ne-Yo risked getting his ass kicked penning the sweet and catchy Never Knew I Needed.
Standout track: Almost There – Anika Noni Rose

The Twilight Saga: EclipseThink what you will about the films, The Twilight Saga soundtracks are consistently beautiful, haunting and eye-opening. While whatever I-used-to-have-integrity indie band gets legions of tween fans with the main single off the album, it’s the supporting tracks that really have bite (boom tish). The uber highlights this time are My Love – Sia, Rolling in on a Burning Tire – The Dead Weather, Lets Get Lost – Beck and Bat For Lashes and Edge Of My Dreams – Lisa Mitchell.
Standout track: Chop and Change – The Black Keys

Kick-AssTo fulfil every cliché related to this film ever – the Kick-Ass soundtrack is, well, kick-ass. It would be hard to find a selection of songs that get across as much action, style and general awesomeness as the film, but thanks to the Prodigy, Primal Scream, RedOne, The Hit Girls and The Pretty Reckless - it does.
Standout track: We’re All In Love - The New York Dolls

Step Up 3DSo the Step Up movies may be suffering from a severe case of the Chu flu, aka the illness designated to the fuzzy and oh-so-pop leanings of director Jon M. Chu, but the dance scenes still rock thanks to awesome choreography and a fresh soundtrack. Mixing dance and hip hop tracks with underrated gems, like Tear Da Roof off from Busta Rhymes, proved to be a successful formula. The film may be flawed, but once again the Step Up soundtrack digs up songs with some of the slickest production values going round.
Standout track: Move (If You Wanna) - Mims

Iron Man 2 Let me clarify, I’m not talking about the original score. I’m of course referring to the AC/DC companion album which grabs their music by the balls and throws it on a soundtrack that walks the rock star image Tony Stark likes to talk.
Standout track: Back In Black – AC/DC

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

There’s garage rock, then there’s the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack which sounds like garage rock inside a Coke can being kicked along a Canadian side street. Translation: EPIC! Indie/alternative pied piper Beck is the genius behind original tracks from Sex Bob-Omb which absolutely shine in their literal, gritty intensity (all sung and played by the cast too). Even the linking tracks teeter from The Rolling Stones classic (Under My Thumb) to a vaguely more mainstream offering from Metric (Black Sheep) and just to throw you completely out of whack, something from someone you’ve never heard of (hello Beachwood Sparks).
Standout track: Garbage Truck – Sex Bob-Omb

Dear readers,

It is with great excitement that I inform you I'm taking a brief hiatus. Why? Well, in approximately 7 hours and 3 minutes I'm jumping on plane for a month long holiday. Yaaaaaaaaaaay! Destinations include Brunei, Egypt, UK and Ireland so needless to say my blogging time is going to be a tad restricted. BUT because I'm awesome and love you dearly, I have a bunch of stories up my sleeve which I will be posting over the next month. Roughly one a week, but rest assured, come November 1 I will be back with a vengenace.

Much movie love,

Where art thou Chromeo?

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Here is where. I chatted with the friendly P-Thugg (above right) from electrofunk duo Chromeo yesterday about music, movies, his BFF Dave 1 (above left) and asked the question a legion of Yo Gabba Gabba fans have been wanting to know - does he wash his hands?

“Yeah, always,” he said.

So, now that’s settled, here are his favourite movies:

“Scarface, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ghost Busters, Beverley Hills Cop and Naked Gun.”

For those who haven’t been exposed to their brilliance before, I suggest you check out Chromeo’s video for their ridiculously catchy new song Don’t Turn The Lights On, off their forthcoming album Business Casual.

The 12 Best Movie Tattoos

Saturday, August 21, 2010

In the real world tattoos are about as common as herpes, and just as permanent, with every second person you see sporting a rad rockabilly sleeve or butterfly on their left buttock. Okay, that might be getting too specific, but my point is there are a lot less tattooed people on screen. Sure, there might be an occasional ship tattooed on an arm like Captain Jack Sparrow or some gnarly eagle across the back as seen in The Expendables recently, but there are only a handful of truly awesome movie tattoos.

That’s not to say they aren’t out there, see the Polynesian-inspired tribal patterns on everyone from Wesley Snipes’ Blade to George Clooney’s Seth Gecko in From Disk Till Dawn. Yet only a small number have had their resounding bad-assness stay in the audiences mind. Here are a dozen that for various reasons I think are the best movie tattoos. Whether it’s the context of the tattoo like in Night Of The Hunter and the Ta Moko of the Maori tribes in Once Were Warriors or, more recently, just the sheer scope of the body art such as Lisbeth Salander’s dragon tattoo or Yakuza enforcer Hanzo from Predators (sorry I couldn’t find better pictures of both). Then there’s your token tough dude tattoos which perfectly represent the `don’t fuck with me’ mantra of the characters a la Romper Stomper, Eastern Promises and Chopper. Anyway, I hope you like my selections and be sure to add a few of your own in the comment section.

Hando (Russell Crowe), Romper Stomper (1992)

Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen), Eastern Promises (2007)
Hanzo (Louis Ozawa Changchien), Predators (2010)
Mickey (Brad Pitt), Snatch (2000)
Fox (Angelina Jolie), Wanted (2008)
Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum), The Night of the Hunter (1955)
Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes), Red Dragon (2002)
The Maori Tribe, Once Were Warriors (1994)
Leonard (Guy Pearce), Memento (2000)

Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire (2010)

Chopper Read (Eric Bana), Chopper (2000)
Denton Van Zan (Matthew McConaughey), Reign of Fire (2002)

Mark, Will, Movie Mazz and those Other Guys

Thursday, August 19, 2010

(Above) FYI this is the best photo of my entire life, Wahlberg and Movie Mazz, together at last.

Marky Mark did not require the funky bunch to walk the red carpet for the premiere of his new film The Other Guys - he just needed his close friend Will Ferrell. Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell faced a horde of screaming fans at Event Cinemas, Robina, on Wednesday for the Australian premiere of their new action comedy. Sporting matching Australian accents, the pair seemed relaxed chatting with fans and joking with each other. When asked where he learnt to do an Aussie accent, Wahlberg said in our national slang `I watched Chopper, my mate Chopper Reid.’

After arriving on the Gold Coast from Sydney earlier in the day and settling into the penthouse at Jupiters Hotel and Casino, where the Australian International Movie Convention is being held, the two slipped away to Lakelands where they played a game of golf before attending the premiere. It is Wahlberg’s first visit to Australia and he said so far he is `loving it’.
“But I got to tell you, from the flight over on Qantas, the A380 Airbus is the greatest thing ever invented, and every second since I’ve been here has been amazing,” he said.
“The people are so hospitable, so polite, I don’t know if it’s sincere or not, but I love it and I’m so sorry it has taken me so long to get here.
“Now I know where the party’s at.”
Ferrell too is a big fan of Australia and even managed to slip a Little River Band joke into the film.
“Little River Band is the greatest band ever,” he said.
“They were a favourite of mine growing up in the mean streets of Southern California.
“We actually love the Little River Band in the states, they are ten times as big there as they are here.”
In The Other Guys Wahlberg and Ferrell play a pair of mismatched police detectives who are constantly being overshadowed by the city’s top cops, played by Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne `The Rock’ Johnson. Eva Mendes also stars in the film as Ferrell’s wife and the funny man had nothing but good things to say about his co-star’s natural assets.
“I can tell you they are real, they are extra perky and they were not waiting for me at home,” he said.

Wahlberg and Ferrell did the genuine nice guy thing and spoke with fans and signed memorabilia, before heading in to introduce the film. The pair have undeniable chemistry and were happy to continue their jokey banter off screen too.
“I loved you in Step Brothers,” Wahlberg told Ferrell.
“I loved you in The Italian Job,” said Ferrell.
Wahlberg responded by saying `that was Matt Damon’ and Ferrell replied ‘oh, this is awkward.’
The movie debuted at number one on the US box office last fortnight, knocking off Inception, and made $US 35.6m in its opening weekend. And for the record, it was a dream come true to meet Mark in real life as I have a well-known obsession with him. Will too, was lovely. Before the red carpet event that night I interviewed the pair of them at the convention and I shit you not, Mark was pushing Will around in an old man’s walker. It was hilarious. My other interview with them was on the red carpet at the premiere and you can watch it in full HERE. It’s worth it just to see Will’s raging full go in for the hug :o) For pic gallery of the premiere hit this. The Other Guys opens on September 9. Stay posted for all my other updates from AIMC coming over the next week or so. A lot happened, so give me some time to write about it all.
