Saturday, January 16, 2010

Woods, seen here with wife Elin Nordegren, is said to have entered a rehab clinic for treatment for sex addiction

Tiger Woods is being treated for sex addiction at a clinic in Mississippi, according to US reports.

The shamed golfer has checked into the Pine Grove Behavioral Health and Addiction Services clinic in the town of Hattiesburg, according to RadarOnline.com.

Woods, who admitted cheating on his wife Elin Nordegren last year, has not been seen since his infamous November car crash outside his home in Florida.

It has been rumoured that the sportsman has been in a string of different locations, but so far there has been no sighting.

Pine Grove is considered one of the top clinics in the US for sexual addiction under the direction of Dr. Patrick Carnes.

People attending Pine Grove for sex addiction follow the Gentle Path program, developed by Dr. Carnes, and done in conjunction with psychiatrists and addictionologists.

Patients take part in a six-week 'intensive programme designed to treat sexual addiction, sexual anorexia, relationship addiction and sexual trauma.'

'The Gentle Path Programme offers gender specific treatment to aid men and women in regaining their freedom from the disease of sexual addiction,' Pine Grove's website states.

'Most patients are simultaneously treated for mood disturbance, anxiety or other addictions, such as chemical dependency.

'The Gentle Path Programme has a special focus on working through past trauma and family problems.

'The programme is designed to help men and women regain freedom from compulsive behaviors and develop a sense of healthy sexuality.'

When patients first arrive at the center they receive psychological testing, evaluation and examination, a chemical dependency assessment and a psychosexual assessment.

Activites include group therapy, psychiatric consultation, behavioral therapy, trauma work, relapse prevention counseling, a ropes obstacle course, family care, exercise and fitness, shame reduction work, a spirituality group, a grief group and yoga.

Dr. Carnes is regarded as the leading expert on sex addiction in the US.

In addition to his work at Pine Grove he is also the clinical director for sexual disorder services at The Meadows clinic in Wickenburg, Arizona.

Woods has been at the centre of a scandal since news first broke of an alleged affair with party hostess Rachel Uchitel more than a month ago.

Since then, a host of women have come forward claiming they have had affairs with Woods.

Meanwhile, tennis player Roger Federer - who starred alongside Woods in an advertising campaign for Gillette in 2008 - has revealed he recently spoke to Woods, and believes he will soon make a spectacular return to the golf circuit.

He told French sports newspaper L'Equipe: 'The tabloids are going crazy, sponsor contracts are falling apart.

'Tiger needs calm. And soon he'll become the wonderful golfer that we know again.

He added: 'I've always been aware that the image you patiently construct for an entire career can be ruined in a minute.

'It scares you a bit, but that's the way things are.'
