Show-stopping: Lady Gaga drew attention to herself in a flamboyant white tiered gown and towering wig at the Brit Awards in London last night

She was the first to arrive - and certainly left a lasting impression.
But onlookers were left stunned and unsure of what to make of Lady Gaga's entrance at the Brit Awards last night.

The singer appeared on the red carpet sporting a white tiered dress with a white pompadour wig that would make even Amy Winehouse's beehive appear tame.

And while Gaga left more to the imagination than usual, the towering ensemble was arguably, even by her standards, one of her most bizarre fashion choices ever

Ensuring all eyes were on her, the Bad Romance singer sashayed confidently into London's Earls Court but it was anyone's guess as to who exactly inspired the trend.

The outfit was reminiscent of several iconic figures, including Pierrot, the melancholic clown-like mime character and 18th Century French Queen Marie Antoinette

Perhaps the the 23-year-old's outlandish look - part angel, part Pagan - was a nod to Alexander McQueen.

Gaga performed at the event later in the evening and dedicated one of her three awards to the late fashion designer, who tragically hung himself earlier this week.

Best in British talent: Pixie Lott wins the award for best dressed of the night in backless lace dress

The fashion winners: Leona Lewis takes a risk that pays off in William Tempest, Florence Welch stuns in gold and Katherine Jenkins take the red carpet by storm in Alexander McQueen

Despite reports she was planning to tone down her stage act in respect to McQueen, Lady Gaga certainly didn't scale down her outfit.

But it appears her risque fashion sense has done little to harm her reputation.

The American took home three awards including International Breakthrough Act, International Album and International Female Solo Artist.

Gaga was perhaps the only artist who opted not to play it safe though

Belles of the ball: Lily Allen, Alexandra Burke and Denise Van Outen dazzle in floor-length gowns

Darkly different: Lily turns heads in Chanel's gothic-inspired black and red dress

Even Lily Allen, who often turns heads with her bold choices, went for the demure look in a flowing black Chanel gown.

Lily, who opened the show with a performance, said: 'The dress is quite heavy and also it's quite tight so it keeps on twisting around.'

‘I was going to give everyone something to look at but I bottled out and changed my mind at the last minute. I decided to be a lady.'

Pixie Lott also chose to wear black but reigned triumphant in a stunning lace dress and 1920s inspired hair style teamed with opaque tights and peep-toe heels.

And the fashion losers: Kylie Minogue, Geri Halliwell and Courtney Love fail sport unflattering outfits

But if Pixie takes home the award for best-dressed then it is Kylie Minogue who wins worst.

The Australian beauty, who usually never puts a fashion foot wrong, wore an unflattering gypsy-inspired dress that failed to make the grade.

Leona Lewis however sported a funky new look in a futuristic William Tempest silver asymmetric dress, Stella McCartney heels and a studded Alexis Bittar cuff.

The refreshing choice showed the Bleeding Love singer buck her usual trend and although she may still need to find her style footing, the X Factor star is certainly on the way to sartorial success

Legging it to the show: Sugababes Amelle Berrabah, Jade Ewen and Heidi Range teeter in skyscraper stilettos

Fellow X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke, rocked up in a satin strapless dress, adding a splash of colour in red as around 2000 fans gathered in the pouring rain at Earls Court in west London to cheer on the celebrities.

Opera singer Katherine Jenkins was another star to break with tradition as she shunned her usual floor-length gown and flowing locks for a younger, sexier look.

The Welsh diva also paid tribute to McQueen, channeling Brit cool in a strapless print dress while Spice Girl Geri Halliwell wore a clutch by the designer.

Playing it safe: Fearne Cotton, who is presenting the live backstage coverage, TV star Cat Deeley in Jimmy Choo heels and Alesha Dixon stick to their usual style

Other than the handbag however, Geri's style attempt - in a white asymmetric dress and crystal headband - appeared more Wonderwoman than Grecian Goddess.

Presenter Denise Van Outen however proved pregnancy need not come in the way of style as she positively glowed in a black strapless dress.

Denise kept it simple with minimal accessories and although she erred on the side of caution, pulled the look off with elegant sophistication.

Too cool for Brit school: Robbie Williams, who has won the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, Calvin Harris and Daniel Merriweather

Here come the boys: JLS, who are up for three awards, looked dapper in matching Emporio Armani silver suits

Sugababes braved the cold in revealing outfits and sky-scraper heels with newcomer Jade attracting the most attention in a thigh-skimming white dress.

But the girls had competition in the form of Alesha Dixon, who dazzled a minidress and orange heels.

Dissapointingly, not even grunge goddess Courtney Love attempted to cause controversy with her outfit as she appeared rather frumpy in a nude embellished dress.

It seems at this year's Brits, there was only one contestant in the shock factor contest - and so the prize most definitely goes to Lady Gaga.

What were they thinking? LaRoux, Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes and Ke$ha should sack the stylist
