Back to the 50s: Mischa Barton shows off her new rockabilly style as she leaves the Byron Tracy Salon in West Hollywood, California

Mischa Barton may be down on her luck, but the actress certainly knows how to cheer herself up.

After indulging in a spot of retail therapy by treating herself to a $15,000 classic convertible Cadillac, she headed off to the hair salon.

Ignoring the current trend for celebrities to go darker, Mischa had her brown hair dyed blonde, before putting it up in a rockability style.

Two ways with blonde: Mischa originally went for a bleached look, before getting a more natural colour

The new look suited the former OC star, who teamed it with a summer dress and a splash of red lipstick.

But while her hair is in great shape, the rest of the 24-year-old's life isn't as rosy.

Despite buying a new car yesterday, she is being sued for unpaid rent, after failing to keep up payments on her New York apartment.

Letting agency MRA Realties Inc claim the actress owes three months of unpaid rent on her apartment in the trendy TriBeCa area of New York.

She has owned a house in Los Angeles for several years, but started renting her $7,000-a-month apartment last autumn after she relocated to Manhattan to film The Beautiful Life.

However the show, about a group of models living and working in the Big Apple, was cancelled in late September after just two episodes were broadcast.

Mischa is currently at a loose end, although she has three films in post-production, and another, The Science Of Cool, in the production stage.
