Hiding away: Ashley Cole watches Chelsea lose against Inter Milan during the Champions League second leg


In recent weeks fans have become used to seeing Ashley Cole hiding away like a frightened child.

And as the shamed footballer finally surfaced last night, he once again tried to avoid notice, hiding beneath the hood of his sweater.

Cole sat sour-faced, his arms crossed defensively across his chest, as he watched his team Chelsea knocked out of the Champions League by Inter Milan.

Despite playing at home Chelsea lost 1-0, making the score 3-1 on aggregate.

Cole has been keen to stay out of the limelight since allegations arose that he had cheated on his wife Cheryl with up to four women, some of whom he sent semi-naked pictures of himself.

He hid from the world's press in France, where he was being treated for an injured ankle.

And since returning to London the 29-year-old has stayed at a friend's house, while Cheryl is bedridden with bronchitis at their £6million Surrey mansion.

He has visited his wife once since the allegations arose, staying at the house for 54 minutes, during which he collected a bag of belongings.

But while relations with his wife have never been worse, it appears that Cole's career may be on the up.

The left-back has been targeted by Real Madrid, who reportedly want to attract him ahead of next season.

According to Spanish daily paper Marca: 'The Englishman from Chelsea is the player for the job. He is one of the best players in the world and wants to come to Spain.'
