Ashley Cole was seen today leaving the London address where he is staying following the break down of his marriage
Ashley Cole shared a 'strained but cordial' chat with poorly Cheryl when he paid a visit to say get well soon.
While the world waits for the singer to instruct divorce lawyers to proceed with a formal split, he dropped in to their £6million Surrey mansion on Friday to see her.
She is bed-bound suffering from bronchitis and the injured footballer wanted to give a personal 'get well soon' message after returning from a sports injury clinic in France
Relations between the pair were 'strained but cordial', a source told The Mirror.
Ashley hobbled up the steps to the front door on crutches after arriving in his supercar.
The source said: 'Ashley's friends had told him how sick she was and he was worried and said he wanted to see her and wish her better.'
Sympathy: The Chelsea star wanted to console Cheryl on her sickbed, making this trip to see her on Friday
Unwell: Cheryl had to pull out of the Jonathan Ross show and a Live Lounge session because of her bronchitis
Cheryl's mother Joan is understood to have been away at the time.
She is believed to take a dim view of allegations that he cheated on the Fight For This Love singer with up to four women, some of whom he sent semi-naked pictures of himself.
Cole was at the house for 54 minutes, claims the source and after a 'calm and civil' chat packed a bag full of possessions.
Mention of his possessions is particularly pertinent with divorce lawyers ready to pounce should Cheryl give the the nod.
She has also been told to expect a straight split of their assets because it was a short marriage (only four years), they both have substantial incomes and there are no children.
Their six-bedroom mansion is to be put on the market and the profit split down the middle.
Cole is likely to keep his £450,000 North London flat and his £830,000 flat in Dubai, while his wife is most likely to keep Coco and Buster, their pet chihuahuas.
The Chelsea footballer earns £6.2million a year. Mrs Cole was paid £1.2million for her role as a judge on The X Factor, has a £500,000 deal with L'Oreal, and has banked several million from her career with Girls Aloud.
She is being advised that the grounds for divorce should be unreasonable behaviour - her husband sending lewd texts with semi-naked pictures of himself to other women - rather than infidelity, which he is not likely to formally admit and is more difficult for her to prove.
Don't let them see me: Ashley appeared to be talking to his driver as they approached the mansion he shares with Cheryl
The source said: 'Cheryl is being told she should not drag this through the courts.
Admirer: Black Eyed Peas rapper Will.i.am
'Lawyers for Ashley could build a case that she wasn't the perfect wife either.
'She has hardly seen him for months on end due to work, her mother Joan's presence in the house has hardly been conducive to romance, she might occasionally have been demanding and moody.
'We know she can also have a difficult side. This is the girl who was found guilty of punching a nightclub toilet attendant.'
Cole has been telling others that he is becoming resigned to the fact that the marriage is doomed, even telling one that he is glad this happened now rather than 'a few years down the road when children could have been involved'.
The Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am, who worked with Cheryl on her single 3 Words, is said to be fuming over the split.
He said: 'It's great news (she separated from her husband). What's that about? Cheryl's too nice to be cheated on. I don't know what he's doing.
'If she was someone who was out in the clubs then I would understand it. But she's not. She the prettiest, hottest girl. She deserves better.'
And he hinted that he may be interested in helping Cole move on from the split, adding: 'She's a beautiful girl and I can't wait to hang out with her more. I'd move to London if it meant being with her.'
