Split: Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva have called time on their relationship after a year


Mel Gibson has split from his Russian girlfriend a year after his wife of 29 years filed for divorce because of his affair with the much younger woman, it was revealed last night.

The 54-year-old ‘Braveheart’ star is said to have ‘drifted apart’ from Oksana Grigorieva, 39, soon after she gave birth to their five-month-old daughter, Lucia.

‘They are both working hard on their careers and trying to raise a sweet baby together. They are still friends and they will both raise Lucia together,’ a close friend of the couple told People magazine.

The National Enquirer claimed the break up was much less cordial, alleging that Gibson dumped his one-time mistress after a row in which she accused him of cheating on her and going back on his pledge to marry her.

Despite having a baby together, the coupe have maintained separate homes, with Gibson living at his family compound in Malibu and Grigorieva at a home in Sherman Oaks, a suburb of Los Angeles.

News of the split comes almost one year to the day when Robyn, a former dental nurse and the mother of Gibson’s seven older children, filed for divorce after learning of her husband’s infidelity.

Gibson is currently in Mexico shooting his latest film How I Spent My Summer Vacation and Grigorieva was heading to her native Russia where she is singing in a charity concert next week to raise money for children with cancer.

As well as a daughter with Gibson, Grigorieva has a twelve-year-old son with British former ‘James Bond’ star Timothy Dalton.

She met Gibson on the set of his recently released thriller Edge Of Darkness and their relationship became public after they were photographed together on the beach near his hideaway home in Costa Rica.

As recently as January, Gibson was gushing about both mother and baby in an American TV interview.

‘She luckily looks more like her mother than me and is an angel and as for the mother, it turns out she’s a wonderful mother,’ he said.

Gibson’s publicist had no comment on the split.

The actor reportedly resisted Grigorieva’s demands to get hitched after his marriage collapsed and speculation that their relationship was on the rocks grew when she failed to attend the big Easter opening of Gibson’s Holy Family Chapel, the church he built near Malibu.

Gibson’s wife Robyn is said to have filed for divorce after learning that her husband was expecting a baby with the Russian musician.

The actor is one of Hollywood’s richest stars and his divorce was reputedly costing him one half of his £300million movie fortune.

Sources claimed last night that there was unlikely to be a custody battle with Grigorieva.

His reputation took a hit four years ago when he allegedly launched an anti-Semitic tirade after being arrested for drink driving.
