Six-year marriage: Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet. They announced their split on Monday
Kate Winslet had grown increasingly frustrated with her husband Sam Mendes's friendship with the young actress Rebecca Hall, friends claimed last night.
Miss Hall, 27, daughter of theatre director Sir Peter Hall and opera singer Maria Ewing, provided Mendes with a 'shoulder to cry on' as his six-year marriage was on the verge of collapse.
Friends of 44-year-old Mendes last night claimed the pair were just good friends who had spent the past year working together on theatre projects in London and New York
But sources close to Miss Winslet said she was unhappy with their closeness.
She and Mendes announced their split on Monday, saying the break-up was entirely 'amicable'. Miss Winslet, 34, is on holiday in Mexico with her two children and her friend Emma Thompson.
Mendes is believed to want to stay in New York, where he has a close circle of friends, including Miss Hall.
The willowy brunette, who studied English literature at Cambridge, has made a name for herself in film and theatre, most recently appearing in Woody Allen's hit film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She is understood to have split from her last serious boyfriend, musician Freddie Stevenson, a few years ago.
Miss Hall first met Mendes while making her film debut in 2006 on Starter For 10, where he was executive producer, and they were photographed together at one of the premieres. They then worked together last summer when Mendes cast Miss Hall in two productions in New York and London as part of his Bridge Project theatre company.
They enjoyed socialising together and her performances were critically acclaimed
'Totally Sam's type': Rebecca Hall, pictured with Mendes, is said to be a 'thespian mix of brains and beauty'
Speaking about Miss Hall's friendship with Mendes, a source close to Miss Winslet said: 'When Kate found out that Sam had grown close to Rebecca she was upset.
Rebecca is totally Sam's type - a thespian mix of brains and beauty.'
A source close to Mendes confirmed to the Daily Mail: 'Sam and Rebecca are good friends, of course they are, they have spent the better part of a year working together on the Bridge Project. But to insinuate that there is anything further in the friendship is taking it too far.'
A spokesman for Miss Hall also confirmed that she is friends with Mendes.
Miss Hall was born in London and privately educated at £29,250-a-year Roedean School in West Sussex before going on to St Catharine's College, Cambridge. She dropped out after two years to become an actress.
Her father, Sir Peter, 79, is one of the most important figures in modern British theatre, having founded the Royal Shakespeare Company and been director of the National Theatre. He is now director of the Rose Theatre in Kingston, South-West London. Sir Peter and Miss Hall's mother, his third wife, were divorced in 1990.
Miss Winslet and Mendes started having problems soon after the filming of Revolutionary Road. He directed his wife in the 2008 film which echoed real life as it followed a couple struggling with their crumbling marriage.
Friends said Miss Winslet had been 'very stressed and on the edge' in recent months and was chain smoking as she tried to deal with the marriage breakdown.
She is believed to have had support from her friend Leonardo DiCaprio, with whom she starred in Revolutionary Road.
Miss Winslet's two children are Joe, six, by Mendes, and nine-year-old Mia from her first marriage to assistant director Jim Threapleton. She was seen weeping at Mexico City airport on Sunday, but tried to cover up her distress by putting on over-sized black sunglasses.
Miss Thompson, who had introduced her to Mendes in 2001 shortly after the collapse of her marriage to Threapleton, was comforting her and yesterday Miss Winslet seemed to be recovering as she lounged on a boat in the sunshine in a black bikini that showed off her slim frame.
